Q: Fetal Maternal Specialist - should I be worried?

I went in for my scan today and he is sending me to a fetal maternal specialist. The doctor says that it is routine, and the scan will do a full scan of the baby segment by segment to check for problems. I've never heard of anybody doing this without problems. Should I be concerned? My screening scans came back low risk for Down's. The earliest appointment was Feb. 2, and I'll be 24 weeks then. It seems too late for most of the tests at this point, and will it discover anything that we can do anything about at this point?

They drew the bloods for the spina bifida today. I went over and over the ultrasound pics, and the only thing that I can see is that the OFD seems to be measuring small. I asked, and he said there was nothing to be concerned about. I don't know if that was trying to be reassuring, or if there actually isn't. There were a lot of women there, and like you said, it's hard to get an appointment. So maybe it is routine. Good luck with yours! I hope that yours turns out ok, and you just get pretty pictures of the bump.

I am going in to a Fetal Maternal Specialist on Tuesday. My 17 week quad scan showed slightly elevated for spina bifida, so he just wants the specialist to either rule it in or out. Also, my OB doesn't have the same machine that the fetal maternal specialist has, so I'll be getting a better look at the ultrasound. I had to wait 3 weeks for my appt, I'll be 21 weeks.

In my opinion, since it is so hard to get an appointment with a FMS, then it's because they have a ton of women seeing them and all their appts are filled. So I'm just lots of women end up seeing an FMS and find out there aren't any major issues... I've decided not to worry about anything because a lot of concerns the doctors have are just precautious and usually false. The scan should clarify any concerns.
