Q: Gender Question...

So..i 'm aware that in the United States they tell the gender of the baby at around 20 weeks...I have a few friends in different countries and they get to know the gender at 14 weeks and sometimes even at 12 weeks...

I just dont get it how is it possible...i highly doubt they have better ultrasound machines then U.S...so what is the reason? why cant they tell the gender in the U.S earlier then 20 weeks?

I am from Denmark and doctors highly recommend not to drink alcohol at all during pregnancy. Until the week 14 the girl's and the boy's gender look the same. After week 14 you can see the gender. I were at private clinic to get a gender scan in 14 week. Then the doctor has confirmed the gender at week 20. It is still a boy :)

I'm in Europe, so I'll try to answer.
They often tell us the gender at 12w, during double test, if the baby isn't shy.
But, sometimes they can make mistake, and nobody takes this prediction for granted.

So, a lot of people know the gender at 12w,
unfortunately, I'm not one of them, my baby is very shy ...

Gotcha...so if I went for an ultrasound at 16 weeks, they could probably tell me the gender right?

I have not found that to be true at all here. I found out at 15 weeks what my baby was and know people that had earlier ultrasounds that were told probably what the gender was... The earlier you are told, the higher the probability that it could be wrong but most of the time they still end up being right. The reason here in the US we aren't told a lot of times until the 18-20 week is because that is when the first (and sometimes only) necessary ultrasound is performed. It is what they call the "anatomy scan" and is when they measure all the different body parts of the baby along with looking for any red flags. I had an NT scan at 12 weeks but it was an elective to find out about Downs/Trisomy 13/18. The U/S tech said that that time she just couldn't tell the gender. We had a private ultrasound done at 15 weeks to find out gender because we wanted to know in time for Xmas. Otherwise our first U/S would have been the anatomy scan at 20 weeks and we would have found out t

and I feel that it's probably not because american fetus' can't tolerate alcohol, and more because dr's dont think americans KNOW what is moderation, and if they drink too much and cause problems, they're likely to blame the Dr that told them some was okay. :(

I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that Americans hate being wrong. (I am one, so I deal with this alllll the time). I think Dr's are afraid of being wrong when they say what it is so early, and may end up getting in trouble or losing clients from bad word of mouth. I don't think the people of this country are very good with "probably"'s either. If we're told "it's probably a boy" it's hard for us not to paint :P I think maybe the people elsewhere are just more realistic. It's similar to what I've found with the alcohol issue. Nearly all other modernized countries say drinking IN MODERATION has no effect on the fetus. In america most dr's outlaw it.
