Q: This is a food question. Seriously NEED help

I am 7 weeks tomorrow. My question has 2 parts.
Every morning I get struck with waves a nausea. The only thing that calms my raging tummy is a can of Ginger Ale. OMG it's like relief sent from Heaven! I get a cup of ice & pour it in. Mind you, it's those lil "half a can" cans. Only 90 calories & I only drink 1 when I get up. After that I go about my day. I got a lecture that Ginger Ale will make my baby have birth defects, make my bones brittle & my blood will thin out. Gees is this true? Can't I just get some nausea relief without worrying about loosing my teeth & my baby having a defect?
Next question. I'm dieing for a turkey sandwich. Is it REALLY that unsafe to have lunch meat? No I will not warm it up. Thats just gross. Thanks in advance:)

I had ginger ale to calm my stomach, never heard anything about birth defects. As far as the cold cuts, I agree that it sounds gross to heat the meat up. I absolutely refused to eat it hot, so my doctor told me to heat it up to steaming and then i could throw it in the freezer to get it cold really fast. I have been doing that for a few weeks now and they taste just fine, and totally calm the craving. Just don't leave the meat in the freezer too long, lol.

In general, a lot of soda is terrible for you. But a small amount isn't going to kill you or your baby. I would brush your teeth afterward, though. As for turkey, it is a small risk but I would say one that isn't worth it if you aren't willing to heat it up in something like a club sandwich or panini. Plenty of women have told me that they were fine doing it but we spent a lot of money and time and heartache trying to have this baby so I think I can deal with finding alternatives that are safer for less than a year. If you want a better solution to ginger ale, try gin gins-they are a ginger candy you can get from Amazon ("candy" but it has very little sugar) and they're stronger and I think they work a lot better.

You could always heat up the meat to steaming and then let it cool. I have also heard that with packaged deli meats the risk of getting listeriosis is fairly low, but at places like subway it is a bit higher because the meat is not sealed like the store bought kind. Either way the risk is very very low. I had a couple turkey sandwiches because I did not have access to a microwave and that was all there was to eat(we were moving)and I have been fine. It's just whether you feel like risking it. I wouldn't have if there had been other food, plus I trust the brand of meat we had.

Who lectured you about the ginger ale? That's got to be one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard. I have never heard of anyone being warned off of drinking carbonated beverages during pregnancy, especially if you aren't drinking too much of it.

As for the deli meat, that is the one I would caution you to use care with. The issue is that listeriosis can be easily passed from mother to baby and can cause miscarriage even if you don't get sick. I ate a lot of deli ham on subs (it was one of the few foods I could actually keep down), but I did heat it to steaming every time.

I drank ginger ale every day up to 12 weeks. I buy the stuff from whole foods or trader joes with natural ingredients. Just go o your closest health food store.

As far as the cold cuts, I'm staying away from any foods that may be harmful. I've had fresh roasted turkey breast a few times though, the real stuff, not the processed deli meat. Just make smart substitutions.

as far as cold cut sandwiches.....sadly I have been warned to stay away completely unless it is warmed for like 30 seconds. The idea of that is just ungodly gross lol so I have stayed away for the last 8 months and it is killing me. soooooo i told my hubby while i am in the hospital he is going to be sneaking me in foods, everything I cant eat now lol. Since I will be breastfeeding I have to continue to stay away from peanutbutter, but i will at least get back my cold lunch meats, rammen, and hot dogs!

good luck! they say it is all worth it, we shall see! lol just kidding it is ^^

ummm to be honest i had the same issue around that time and one of the main things suggested from web MD and some other woman I spoke to was ginger like ginger ale, all natural ginger cookies and water with lemons in it. I drank a lot of ginger ale because it was the only thing that helped me....i stopped once the nausea went away after about two months or so. The only thing I heard that was really bad was so much sugar, i was told by my doc that it is better than having anything like diet sodas. Sugar wont cause birth defects....but imitation sugar like in diet sodas can. It is called aspertain or something like that. Just do what makes you feel better for now, it wont hurt your baby and then after that cut down on your soda intake as much as possible...to much sugar could lead to gestational diabetes.
