Q: Picking up Toddler?

Not that I can avoid it... but I'm curious as to any of you that have toddlers at home and are pregnant.

I'm 5w3d, and I have a 19mo that weighs around 26 pounds. It could just be in my worrisome head, but it seems like I've noticed some very slight cramping at times after picking her up. Granted, I am cramping on and off regardless, which I'm sure is just my uterus getting geared up.

I haven't seen my OB yet to inquire, but is lifting and/or carrying your toddler something to be concerned about?

I had a MMC earlier this year (fyi, that I DON'T attribute to carrying her around) but I am just curious if/how it can effect things.

My doctor told me that if I was used to doing something than it shouldnt be a problem to continue to a certain extent. He also said it was more concerning that I dont hurt my back while pregnant bcs you cant safely take anything really effective in that situation. I have a 35 lbs almost 3 year old who I pick up all the time and I just listen to my body and dont do anything to crazy or unusual while holding him. If you do start to feel uncomfortable you can always encourage that your child climbs up on you instead of picking up! Good Luck!!

I would just call and ask to speak to the doctor. I think its fine. Ur body is used to it so ur not really straining to pick her up but to be sure I would just call and leave a message for the doctor to call u back. I also wouldnt carry her all over the place but general lifting like into the car or a high chair is routine and most likely fine. Like I said, if i were u i would just call the dr and ask. My only concern is you have cramps. just take it easy. I lift a 160 pound man (im a HHA) and i know my time with him is limited now that im 6 weeks prego but I have been doing it for almost 5 years and its like lifting a baby to me by now lol. Im a little concerned about that as well but i think its ok as long as my body says its ok.. My back kills me more than anything.. (I use my arm and back muscles instead of my stomach). On days that I am having cramping, I try not to move him too much. I just listen to my body for the most part. Im sure the doc will tell u the same.

Iam currently 25 weeks and i have a 2 year old son as well who weighs around 32 pounds. Although I don't carry him around a lot I do still pick him up from time to time. I asked my doctor and she said just try not to lift anything heavier than him. I've so far had no problems but I also make sure to lift with my knees instead of my back to avoid injuring or straining it.

I do home health, I'm being careful with my two bigger kids but my smaller who is about 50 I lifted till about 4 months and I did fine but I am also use to carrying her. I am 24wks now and I can still pick up my two year old goddaughter whos 32 pounds but I'm careful about carrying her for extended periods. I also had a miscarriage back in April and it wasnt attributed to my job either. I would just be cautious if it doesn't feel right when you lift your toddler I would try to encourage being a "big kid" walking and use strollers and carts when out if needed. Best of Luck!

I work in childcare and I lift babies from the age of 2 months up to 2 years old. I think if it's something you are used to doing on an everyday basis I don't think it would make a difference.....I don't know though. I do have a 5 year old but I don't lift her.......
