Q: Nosy Coworker Criticizing my Eating

I have a coworker who, any time I eat anything that's not vegetables, tells me I'm going to get too fat. Today I got a some bread from Starbucks and she told me I wasn't going to be able to touch my toes. I pointed out I haven't gained any weight, actually I've lost some, but she just came back with "well you're not supposed to yet". Yes, I'm aware, thank you. I'm also pretty tiny so I'm showing at 13+5. I think it looks cute but she makes me feel like I'm too big already. Any suggestions for politely dismissing her comments and making her stop watching everything I eat?!

The best piece of advice I was given with my first is only listen to others when you want to, let what they say go straight out the other ear :)

Wow, who made her the food police? It's horrible when people start watching what you eat, it drives me mad. We're all entitled to little treats every now and again. Politely ask her why is she so interested in your food consumption, and make a joke out of her obsession on your diet. Happy eating. xx

I like to just take what I'm given that way. For me i would probably say something like "yea, I'm planning on getting fat now because I have an excuse want some bread?" or "if i can't see my toes I don't have to tie my shoes (or wear heels)" and then continue on. Letting people know yesss I have thought this through (even when I didn't) on decisions about my body and baby is generally the easiest way for me to deflect.

I'd just say "Thank you for your interest" and continue what I'm doing. EVERYBODY thinks they're THE expert on baby making and baby growing and baby raising. I just let them continue to think that and go on my merry way. :)

People think as soon as a woman is pregnant they are public property. It really makes me angry. Wish people would just but out and mind there own business

Lol that's clever. She has several grown kids. In general I do eat very well, but sometimes I want a treat! And even if I gained 100 lbs she shouldn't be walking around commenting about it! Sadly, I know this is only the start of it. 6 months to go and then it'll be even worse once I have a newborn. That's why I'm exploring how other people deflect that kind of behavior without making enemies :)

That sounds very annoying.... it seems like when a woman is pregnant, everyone thinks it means that they can comment on her weight and what she eats! Not sure why! I generally try to make a laught and make a joke that still lets the other person know that I don't care too much for their comments. In your case, I would probably try something like "You seem to have some kind of obsession about the weight I gain or don't gain. Chances are it's related to something that happened in your childhood, should we talk about it and see if we can resolve it?"

You're not too big, it's all in how you carry and how big/small you were before you got pregnant. I would just brush off those comments. Being pregnant, you need to eat a balanced diet, mind you I honestly don't. I have been craving pizza and nothing but for a while now. Has your coworker ever been pregnant??
