Q: Cloth Diapering Dilemma. Any suggestions?

I am planning to cloth diaper. I really don't want to buy a bunch of different sizes so I wanted to use one-size prefolds and some one-size covers. The problem is the only one-size prefolds I can find are gerber or econobum. I would get the econobum but there is no option for just buying the prefolds. You have to buy their system which comes with 12 prefolds and three covers. I don't really want their covers. I want to buy prettier ones if I can. I heard the gerber prefolds are terrible, but they are less expensive. My question is could I buy prefolds of another brand in a larger(regular) size and fold them down to fit a smaller baby? Say I bought 24 regular chinese prefolds and folded them down and put them in the covers I like, would that work? I don't have a lot of money to spend up front so the all in one diapers aren't an option right now, that's why I'm going with prefolds. I also heard something about using flour sack towels from walmart, has anyone used those?

So I went to Walmart and bought a bunch of flour sack towels. I think these are going to work. They're much thicker than the gerber prefolds and 100% cotton. I'll probably buy some one-size diaper covers and pad fold these inside them. I also have several receiving blankets with cute prints that I think will work for day time wear without a cover. So I think I'm set for diapers. I can stop panicking now. Hope this works out. I've been obsessing over cloth diapers for three days now.

honestly i am going to be using mostly Alva diapers which are basically a pocket diaper. i just spent 173 dollars on 50 of them which is 3.46 a diaper which is a steal and if you can wash diapers every few days its more than enough diapers to get you through. I got mine on ebay.

I too, am planning on cloth diapering. This is our first, so I asked a friend who has done it for both of her girls for the break down on it. They bought all of theirs second hand. Check second hand baby stores or eBay for them. You may be able to find some in your area on craigslist, too. Also, she bought many different types and made them all work together. She would fold prefolds and use them as inserts, for example. She did tell me, though, that in her experience, it was best to go with gDiapers. The others would leak or blowouts would lead to messy cloths, car seats, etc. I am planning on just borrowing hers, as our girls will be 8 months apart. However, her initial plan was to resell them as she needed new sizes to cut down on the cost. I hope something in this helps! :)
