Q: Fundal Height vs. Ultrasound for determining size of baby in 3rd trimester.

So 2 weeks ago baby was measuring slightly small for average on Ultrasound. Now, baby is measuring 2.5 weeks ahead via fundal height (measuring tape). Doc says it could be a growth spurt. Anyone else had this? Which is more accurate I wonder? You'd think u/s but some disagree.

Extra amniotic fluid can make your uterus measure bigger. I am having the same thing going on. I don't think ultrasounds are 100 percent but they are definitely more accurate than just measuring the fundal height.

There may have been a growth spurt. With my daughter, I had a scare that they were going to take her early because an ultrasound showed her body significantly smaller than her head, they presumed IUGR, and said that if she measured the same at the next ultrasound, she would be delivered early. By the next ultrasound, she was perfectly on target. I always measured exact on my fundal height, but she was a small baby, only 10th percentile.

I'd always go by ultrasound but that's because I measure 3-4 weeks further than I am, but my lil girl is measuring right on target with my ultrasounds.

U/S for sure. The fundal height seems like it works for some people and is way off for many. Especially when they're using it to estimate baby's size.
