Q: Neg blood test, but Pos HPT

I just had a blood test on wed. and it was negative and now 2 days later took 2 HPTs and they are both clear positives. I think this is strange. I will have to wait till Monday and call doctor. Thanks.

It sounds to me like this is an issue of the doctor ordering a qualitative blood test (one that simply records a result of "pregnant" or "not pregnant"), rather than a quantitative blood test (one that actually records the amount of hcg present). A qualitative blood test really isn't all that much more accurate than a urine test, because it still is looking for a specific level of hcg in the blood to diagnose pregnancy, whereas with a quantitative test, a professional can evaluate the results and even if your levels aren't above a specifically defined minimum at the time the test is taken, they can make an educated guess based on your actual circumstances. Or, it is possible that the quantitative test was the one given, but perhaps the results weren't given directly to a doctor or nurse who had discussed your circumstances, and the levels of hcg were below the amounts normally deemed to indicate pregnancy.

I had this happen to me too! On 6/28 i had a negative blood test and then on 7/5 I had super dark positive urine test. My OB said that was the first time hes ever seen that. I would have been 3 weeks and 3 days pregnant when he did the blood test, so it was truely a false negative.
