Q: Fish oil or Cod liver oil and how much daily for first trimester?

Hello! Just found out 4 days ago we were successful in our second month of TTC! Now I'm trying to change gears from fertility eating/supplements to first trimester~For about 6 months I have been taking Carlson Elite professional strength Fish oil. It is made from fish body oils from deep, cold water fish. However I see reference to Cod liver oil a lot, is one better then the other? Safer? I chose this one for it's purity which was suggested in one of my pregnancy books for being valid and reputable.

Do you ladies have a favorite brand?

Also what dosage do you take for the first trimester etc? I have been taking one daily for about 6 months now, which has 800 mg Omega 3 from fatty acids, 400 mg EPA, 300 mg DHA, and 100 mg other omega 3. I try to eat fish/seafood from the suggested safe seafood list 1-2 times a week as well, so I'm not relying entirely on supplements for fish oil in my diet.
Any info is much appreciated! Thanks all! :)

I would avoid supplementing with fish or cod liver oil. It is best to get your dha through diet & prenatal dha supplements. For my dha supplement, I use a prenatal algal dha gel capsule. You can find them in any drug store.

First, congrats! I was told not to take fish or cod liver oil unless it's the really nice kind that has to be refrigerated and is typically expensive. If you eat your salmon and fish (within the limits) you should not have to worry about it. You can also buy eggs and milk that are fortified with fatty acids and DHA and some prenatal vitamins are as well. For those nutrients, I would really just be sure you're getting them in your diet instead of supplementing them.
