Q: Migraines while pregnant? How do you deal?

I am prone to migraines when not pregnant (usually at least two a month). During the most of the first trimester, I didn't get ANY headaches, migraine or otherwise! I was hoping that would stick around the entire pregnancy. Not so much. The end of the first trimester and into the second trimester, I am getting migraines pretty much daily. I rarely take tylenol because it seems pointless as it doesn't work much at all. My doctor said I could consume small amounts of caffeine. I have tried that and it works some, but then the migraine will come back full-force. Anyone dealt with this? Any advice? I am almost 18 weeks now, by the way.

By the way, how does chiropractic work actually work for a pregnant woman? Don't you have to lie down on your stomach? I know that the chiropractic office where my bro-in-law goes also has massage therapy in the same office. I was thinking about doing that, but then wondered how I would be able to lie down on my tummy...

Oh boo that's so frustrating when they don't cover it. I hope you find some relief!

Thank you everyone! I will look into a chiropractor (never gone to one), though I know our insurance doesn't cover it. Not sure how much it'll cost. I get my blood pressure checked at each OB appt, so I guess they aren't concerned with that being an issue because they've never mentioned it. My doctor today said that hopefully they'll stop within the next few weeks because of where I am in the pregnancy.

You should talk to your doctor immediately as migraines can be a sign of more serious complications. You will want to monitor your blood pressure and rule those out. You can also discuss safe ways to treat them-for me I just drink lots more water and resign to getting some extra rest. I am really trying not to take medication during my pregnancy but if I were getting migraines every day I'd definitely want to know what all my options were! Have you thought about seeing a chiropractor? Something could be out of line in your neck and they may be able to provide you some relief.

Also, taking separate magnesium and potassium supplements on top of you prenatal vitamins helps alot too. Most prenatal vitamins don't have any of these two minerals and they are essential to keeping up electrolyte balance, which can really help keep migraines under control. Good luck, i know how debilitating migraines are.

I am just like you, prone to migraines all my life. Ive found that dehydration will bring them on fast! During this pregnancy, i started seeing my chiropractor again and the neck adjustments help immensely! Your spine and neck can get really out of whack from sleeping in positions you maybe didn't before, or just from carrying your weight differently. I also find that the only thing, medication wise, that really knocks out my migraines is a combination of ibuprofen and Tylenol. You can take ibuprofen up to 26 weeks, provided you don't have other complications going on. My doctor has confirmed this for me too. Take them together and they work wonders for pain! You just cant take the ibuprofen after 26 weeks due to the risk of heart valve damage to the fetus. Apparently, it's not a risk before that point. I'm 28 weeks now, so i can't take it anymore and i'm finding that the only thing that helps is the chiropractic work on my neck.

Thank you for your suggestion. I'll have to give the cold cloth and hot water a try!

I too am prone to migraines and what has worked for me is a cold cloth on you neck or head and put your hands and feet in hot water. The cold cloth and just rest helps too. Drink plenty of water as you might be dehydrated. Best of luck. I have been pretty lucky so far. I'm 8 1/2 weeks & migraines was one of my biggest fears. I'm sorry you are dealing with that
