Q: Harmony Testing

For those of you that chose to or had the Harmony Testing, when did you do it? I'm 35 and don't want to jump right to an amnio, wanted to do the Harmony testing first. TIA.

No problem! I'm sure they call tests different names in different countries. The Harmony test is fairly new. I believe it hit the market in June 2012. Because I had the Harmony, I was able to skip the quad, but I did have the quad back in early 2011 with my first child.

The quad test is just a screening that looks at different levels in your bloodstream to see if the baby is at risk for Downs, trisomy 13 and 18, and spina bifida. They typically do it around 16-18 weeks, and until the Harmony testing, it was standard 2nd trimester testing. However, it had a high false positive rate that caused a lot of needless worry and more invasive testing. With the Harmony, they can actually look at DNA, so it is a lot more accurate.

It is a blood test that pulls the fetal DNA from my blood to test for Downs, & trisomy 13 & 18. It also can pull the sex chromosomes to determine the gender. Highly accurate & low false positive rate, unlike the quad test. They were telling me that in about 5 years this test should make amnios obsolete! They typically do it at the 12 week NT scan.

I had it done at 12 weeks bc I was going to be 36 at the time of the birth. I had the results & gender back in 10 calendar days (including the day of the blood draw). I wasn't looking to have an amnio, but I was thrilled with a noninvasive blood test! Everything came back normal & gave me peace of mind! I highly recommend it!
