Q: When did you successfully change from crib to bed?

My little boy, Aryn, will be almost a year when his sister Mikah is born. We're planning on keeping her in a bassinet in our room, just like we did Aryn, until she's around 4 months or so. So that means at 16 months old Aryn will either need to vacate his crib, or we'll need a new one. What age did your little ones make the transition from a cage to a bed? ;) I'm a little concerned about letting him just do what he wants at that age, especially when the 2 kids will share a room. Not sure I want him climbing into his old crib to sleep next to his itty bitty sister lol. And I'm not sure what he'll be capable of since at 8 1/2 months he's trying to walk on his own :P Could be climbing out of his crib by then anyways? Thanks ladies!

Well, every child & situation is different, but most experts recommend you transition from crib to bed between 2-3 yrs. With our oldest, we transitioned her out at 27 mos bc she had started doing somersaults out of her crib. It was actually perfect timing bc they also recommend (if u have another baby on the way that will be sleeping in the crib) to move them to a bed at least 4 mos before the new baby arrives. Our 2nd child was due in March, so that gave us 6 mos (Ava went to a bed last Sept). If you have room & can afford a second crib, I would go that route before moving him out too early. It takes a while for them to learn the rules of a bed, even at 2-3 yrs. However, if buying a 2nd crib isn't an option, you just do the best you can. Baby proof the room, secure gate at the door to prevent night time wandering, & lots of reinforcement that you stay in the bed & go to sleep. But you do want to make it where he can't get into the crib unsupervised w/baby. Gl!

It all depends on the child. My son is what I like to call a super sleeper! He has slept through the night since 4 weeks old. We moved when he was 13 months and when we reassembled his crib we decided to just put the toddler rail on instead. He has been doing great and it has been 5 months now. He does get up occasionally in the middle of the night but it is always for a reason, like he wet through his diaper. I know this is not a typical age but if you think he is ready I say go for it. We would never have known our son would do this well if we didn't try it. Plus it is really cute when he wakes up in the morning, pushes our door open and runs into our room! Best of wishes!
