Q: Tubal Ligation vs Vasectomy

We're going to try Mirena for a bit after this baby, but if that doesn't work I think we're going for a permanent procedure, as Depo has some bad success rates, & pills aren't a safe idea for me because I'm not reliable. At any rate, trying to decide who gets clipped or snipped. I'm afraid of Tubal Ligation because IF on the OFF CHANCE that a sperm does get thru and implants in the egg, it most likely becomes an ectopic pregnancy& we would need to abort, because it wouldn't survive or go where it needs to because of the scar tissue/tie; That really is not okay with me. I would rather accidentally get pregnant than need to abort a child just because I made a decision to have surgery to avoid children. Has anyone had a successful accidental pregnancy after tubal ligation? Anyone have any bad experiences with Vasectomies? My husband isn't thrilled with the idea, but he gets my reasoning. Plus it's not like it changes much for him. It's a half hour thing w/ a couple stitches. lol

I think since women go through pregnancy. Men should get snipped when the time comes lol! its easier for them to have a vasectomy and it's easier to have a reversal if later down the road you change your mind.

I had my son and daughter within 15 months of each other. I am currently on the Mirena and it is great. No side effects and no surprise pregnancy either so far. I have had it for 4 months. I think we will want more kids, but not for a few years, so this is a great solution for us in the interim.

I almost got a tubal in March after having baby #2. We were having a c section, so it would be easy access. However, I did some research & there are some rare complications: increase risk of post partum depression, going into early menopause, etc. I had pretty bad PPD after #1, so that was a deal breaker for me. Vasectomies seem to have fewer complications & like you said, is a quick snip snip. My hubby has volunteered to be the one to go under the knife, so he can have at it. I think they both have the same basic effectiveness rate - as long as you get semen sample follow ups or give your tubes time to scar (it depends on how your Dr "ties' them).

I know this is an odd place to post this question since most of us are pregnant, but with the good questions about birth control circulating I thought this would be a good one. Anyone have any thoughts on this?
