Q: 5 weeks and 6 days with no heartbeat detected

Had an ultrasound this morning and it was by far the worse one I have ever had. The technician was horrible. A little after starting the procedure he asked me if I've had any bleeding or spotting. I told him 'no' and he just kept looking at the screen (which he had turned away from me and never let me see ever!!!). After a while he said he had to do an internal ultrasound. I said "ok" and he proceeded with that. He never said a word to me during the whole thing and then when he was done said "you will have to contact your midwife for the results". I asked if everything looked ok and he said "I cannot say, I am just the technician".
I called my midwife and asked her if everything was ok and she said the baby is measuring at 5 weeks 6 days, but there is no heartbeat detected. I go for more testing and another ultrasound next week.
My question is, has anyone else had an ultrasound that early where there was no heartbeat detected and their baby was s

Thank you everyone! I am feeling a lot better now. Hopefully I won't have to have the same technician for the next ultrasound. Thanks again!

At 5 weeks and 6 days it's still way too early. My GP performed an ultrasound and the only thing we could pick up was the gestational sac and I was measured to be around 5 weeks and she told me to come back in four weeks time.

This is what I picked up on this other website, and most of them say the same thing:

*Babyâ??s heart is about 2 millimeters from top to bottom and can be seen beating on ultrasound between six and eight weeks*

So you need not to worry. And so sorry for the mean technician...some people just have issues. All the best! And read up on pregnancy and how the baby is developing and how your body is changing and all. This has helped calm me down a lot and also be clued up what is going on from week to week with my baba and myself.

At that early in the pregnancy, an internal ultrasound is usually the only way to find baby since they are so tiny at that point. It's also too early to hear the heartbeat. It sucks waiting, but if you can hold off a few more weeks and have another ultrasound (if they'll do one), that would probably be best. The doctor/midwife should check heartbeat at every appointment with a doppler, which is always nice and reassuring when you hear it. Good luck and hopefully you hear a nice, strong heartbeat in a few weeks!!

Usually around the 6 wk mark a heartbeat can be detected. However, things change so fast in those first few weeks, that if you are off on your dates by just a couple of days, it can make a huge difference. That's why most drs will not do an ultrasound until the 7-9 wk mark. They want to avoid unnecessary worry. I'm sure everything is just fine & when you go back next week, you will see that heartbeat!

Thanks lyssa7872. Makes me feel better knowing I'm not alone. Always a little worrisome when you hear that there is no heartbeat. Next time I will ask to see the screen. With my last baby I never had to ask, but maybe those techs were different. Thanks again.

That's not abnormal. We didn't see one til nine weeks. At 5 you're really only two or three since sperm met egg. Try not to worry :) he does seem like an inconsiderate tech, but mine never can tell me anything either and normally show me the screen only when I ask. Sorry you had a bad experience!
