Q: Bumper pad...to buy or not to buy?

I have picked out the crib bedding set that I want to purchase. It does not come with a bumper pad, but I do have the option of buying it separately. My question is is the bumper pad more for the "cuteness" factor or does it serve a "safety" purpose? I am kind of concerned about when the baby starts rolling...could it pose a suffocation hazard?? I need your input please ladies :)

Medical professions do not know ANY specifics as to what causes SIDS so they are over causious of many things. That said, I too heard the warnings of suffocation. I can see this being an issue with a new baby (MAYBE)...even then it seems highly unlikely. But to be safe, I would use them once they are able to roll as others have suggested.

We used a mesh bumper instead of the one that matched the bedding. We didn't use it until he was rolling around and got his foot caught in the bed rails once and then we put it on. You can find the mesh ones at almost any store that sells baby items. They are so if their faces turn into them they can breathe through the mesh and won't suffocate. Some people don't ever need them, but let me tell ya....hearing your baby scream because his foot got stuck in the spindles is not pleasant!

We used one for my son but only after he could roll very well. Without it he kept rolling himself into the bars at night and waking herself up by hitting his his face lol. I wouldn't have used it before then though because of the risk of him rolling and getting stuck face first in it. It's all about what works best for you and your family. I got a lot of dirty looks for it, but it saved us from getting up several times a night soothing a baby with a headache :P He's 10 months old now and he still moves all about his crib in his sleep!

Hey I did buy one but as soon as I gave birth and the midwife saw the bumper she told me a couple of stories how baby's have died of not being able to breather or being strangled by them because there little necks got stuck. So I took it off, I think it is just for cuteness. It is totally up to you though and they are trying to ban them now.

I refused to use bumper pads with either of my babies bc they do pose a suffocation hazard. Both SIDS experts & the Academy of Pediatrics strongly recommend that nothing goes in the crib but a fitted sheet & baby. Since their have been reported cases of babies suffocating in bumper pads, I strongly believe it isn't worth the risk. They've been debating whether to take them off the market, and have in a few places. If you are worried about baby hitting their head or bruising (mine never have & my oldest treated the crib like an Olympic sporting event), they do sell much safer options to put along the rails.
