Q: Ridiculous Question #2

Do at home heart rate dopplers hurt the baby at all? My spotting/bleeding has got me checking more often than I wanted but I don't want to do any harm.

I used mine pretty much everyday early on before baby started moving, sometimes more than once a day. I gave birth to a perfectly healthy baby girl a week and 1/2 ago. My doctor said it was fine if it gave me peace of mind. I have a friend who is an u/s tech and she said it's fine as well. She gave herself u/s scans daily and that's way more powerful than a home doppler. Her babies were all fine too!

I never had bleeding issues, but after 4 miscarriages last year we bought one for this pregnancy and I listened every other day at least until I felt the baby kick all of the time. Even now I still use it when he isn't as active. I did a lot of research and found nothing conclusive that it was harmful. Best of luck!

Thanks for the info! I don't use it daily but about twice a week. It is very reassuring. Glad to hear I'm not the only one with bleeding issues.

I also wanted to add that I used mine 3-4 times a week early on because I had frequent heavy bleeding and spotting. I am now 25 weeks and I still use it every so often. I like to use it before I jump in the shower, I normally only listen for 30 seconds or less. I just like to hear the heart beating away sometimes. :)

We had an ultrasound today and everything looks great with baby and everything is normal with the pregnancy. I also know a bunch of other women who used it daily or almost daily in early pregnancy and they had no issues either.

I did a lot of research on this before I bought mine. From what I determined, there is no scientific proof that daily use will hurt the baby. This is based on the fact that no fetal harm has ever been linked to the use of a Doppler. However, there is not a lot of scientific research on it due to the fact it would require a study on pregnant women. And because of this some doctors and organizations like to say that Doppler use "probably" won't hurt the baby.

The Mayo clinic states that "In 30 years of regular use, no adverse effects have ever been demonstrated from ultrasound testing. Research has been done investigating both the noise produced in the utero and the heat produced by ultrasound, and no problems have ever been detected from its use in exposed babies. There is no reason to feel uncomfortable about the use of ultrasound during pregnancy and there are great benefits to using it."
