Q: IS MY DOCTOR CRAZY???!!!

Hi ladies! Am 6 weeks pregnant today. Just come from my 1st Docs appointments and thankfully my baby and I are healthy and ok. Doc has given me an apptmnt for 29th September when al be around 14 weeks. What I find puzzling is he has ADAMANTLY refused to prescribe prenatal vitamins to me! He said that my baby is too small and weak for "chemicals"! He said that even folic acid is unsafe!!! I have been taking folic acid for more than a year now and am still taking some right now. Should I stop and wait to b 14 weeks??!

That 1st doctor sounds insane! I began taking prenatal vitamins before I got pregnant last September, then I had a m/c in November and my ob/gyn told me to continue with the prenatal vitamins even afterwards b/c she knew we would be trying again later on. I found out I was pregnant again in April and so far, so good. I think I have been on prenatal vitamins since August of 2010!!

Am happy to say am back on folic acid infact am on Pregnacare. I had been off folic acid for 2days and then secretly went back on after all your comments. But now am so much confident. Hope the 2days I was off it dint do any harm to my baby.. Now I have a new doc apptmnt at the end of this month. Hope you ladies are all ok. Happy n Healthy 9 months to us all!!

That can be very confusing especially coming from a Dr. A year before I got pregnant I read the book "what to expect before expecting" and it recommends to take prenatal vitamins up to a year before conceiving. I believe you are doing the right thing by taking vitamins. You should probably get a second opinion. Good luck!

I KNOW!! That's what's confusing me as well! I am so scared about spina difida, cleft lips and all that! What he said is like all vitamins apart from Vitamin C,are stored in the body. So that's y he said that after all the folic acid ad taken has already been stored in my body and its sufficient for the baby. Said that as much as folic acid is important, that too much of it my harm my baby! That I should wait 2 months before continuing so that at least we don't risk poisoning the baby so early during pregnancy... I have googled all afternoon and I can't seem to see that info anywhere! What do I do?!

It sounds like your doctor is crazy! Please take prenatal vitamins and maybe look for another doctor or opinion. I don't want to scare anyone, but I lost my baby girl at 18 weeks due to a severe spinal defect and I had been taking prenatal vitamins for 3 months prior to and during the pregnancy. Now I am on a mega dose of folic acid (4mg) plus my prenatal vitamins. It's not worth taking that chance because your doctor thinks you aren't deficient in folic acid.

I have been doing the same as you, when we decided to start trying I bought folic acid as I feel it was the responsible thing to do. I took it for 6 months and then we got pregnant and I'm still taking it ( spinal issues scare me). If it makes you feel any better, it is very, very hard to overdose on folic acid .

Maybe be honest, say, " I have read many books that advise women to take folic acid both before and during pregnancy and I am feeling confused about your recommendation against it. Can you please explain your position further so that I can have a clear understanding."

Question- They can "test" to see if you have enough folic acid in your system?

His argument is that my results showed that I do not have folic acid deficiency, probably due to the fact that I had been taking folic for a year. That my body has enough folic acid as it is! Am so CONFUSED!!!

Wow, what a confusing thing to hear! I've never heard of a doctor telling a pregnant woman that since the first thing any woman does when trying to get pregnant or when she finds out that she is , is head over to the drugstore and get her prenatals & folic.

Is it possible that you are using a very low quality brand and that is what he is referring to ? Also, if you are in the US, the regulations for prenatal pills is quite weak so research is required on your part to make sure you don't get ones with "chemicals" or in them.

New Chapter Organic Prenatals are very good ( excellent reviews in both Canada & US) but they are very expensive..buy them on line for a better deal)

SISU , Vivitas, Quest, ( Canadian companies) Have very good reviews. I have used all three without problem and am using SISU right now.

Good luck.
