Q: First visit

Hi,
I had a first visit yesterday at 8w2d. She checked for heart beat and said normal. She used a device and pressed on my lower abdomen to check heartbeat. I am not sure what it is technically called. Today morning I had brown discharge while using restroom. I am continually checking it and saw similar thing in aftn. I am really scared. Is it because of scan or examination? Or is it normal. I am afraid it will increase. Also from yesterday night I started taking tablets given for vomitting is it because of it. As it is happening immediately after checkup which went fine, hoping nothing wrong in me.

Spotting is very common after examination. This is because your cervix is much more sensitive and the blood flow there is increased to support your growing baby, and when touched it will bleed a little. Brown color is good, that means old blood. If its bright red, that may cause some concern and you should check with your doctor. You may also have brown spotting after sex. Mommybutterfly is right, after hearing the heart beat the risk of miscarriage does go down. As for the nausea medication, you should be fine. I had to take it with my daughter who is 2 now and I have to take them for my second pregnancy that I am in now. Good luck and try not to worry. I know its hard not to worry especially when its too early to feel your little one moving for reassurance.

The spotting is normal and nothing to worry about unless it turns red, gets heavier, or is accompanied by cramps. Try to relax once the find a heartbeat your miscarriage risk lowers it also keeps lowering during milestones such as ultrasound when you see the heartbeat and once you're out of your first trimester.
