Q: Zika Virus

I live in North Carolina but we are scheduled to take a family beach trip to the Gulf Shores in Alabama in 3 weeks. I'm feeling nervous about being so close to where the virus is showing itself. I need some thoughts from other pregnant women, what would you do?

Things we do know: Staying away from areas with an active outbreak is the best option if you are pregnant or if you are thinking of trying to get pregnant anytime soon. If you have to go to the area, wear long clothes and DEET sprayed over the clothes. This goes for your partner too (it's sexually transmitted, so anything he gets you get). Also both of you should stay indoors as much as possible.

Possible over reactions: Even in areas where there is an "active" outbreak, the % of people that are getting the disease are still in a minority. Especially in the US. http://www.cdc.gov/zika/intheus/maps-zika-us.html
And the % of affected babies is WAY WAY smaller than that.

I would prefer to not travel to a zone affected by zika until we know more, but if I had to go ... I'd go and wear DEET and long clothes and make my family (dad and kids) do that too.

Zika has me totally freaked out. And I live in an area where the mosquito isn't really that prevalent, so I have no real reason to be freaked out. But there is SO MUCH that is UNKNOWN about zika right now (I'm a biological-physics PhD, so I have some idea about this stuff, but it's not my area of expertise).

We know that zika is sexually transmitted, but we don't know if it can affect future babies. If you or your partner get zika today and have babies 3 years from now, could they be affected? What about if a kid gets zika now, could they have affected babies 20 years from now? If you are having a healthy pregnancy then get zika in the 2nd or 3rd trimester could the baby be affected? Likely no, but we have no data to support this for zika. Is microcephaly the only thing that could affect babies with regard to zika? This is just so unknown right now.

Character limit ... more on next.

Do what you feel comfortable with. There's always bugs spray and other preventive measures. However, i did find this....
"On January 22, 2016, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) posted interim guidelines for health care providers in the United States caring for pregnant women during a Zika virus outbreak. CDC is recommending that all pregnant women consider postponing travel to areas where Zika virus transmission is ongoing." Can you do a indoor trip instead?
