I had brown discharge that lasted 5 weeks and in 4 different occasions I had red bleeding. Luckily the bleeding was just at that moment. I began with the discharge at about 5 wks and stopped around 11 weeks. I am also RH - and got a shot for it just in case I was miscarrying and the baby's blood came in contact with mine. I've read in other forums that the discharge is due to the placenta taking over. Hope this helps and the best way to make sure everything is okay is by seeing a Dr. or just going to the ER.

Most doctors and midwives say that spotting and cramping are both normal, especially in the first trimester. They are however more concerned if the bleeding becomes heavy and / or is accompanied by intense cramping, but either could be a cause for concern.
Whether it is a REAL cause for concern or not should be determined by your doctor though. They will likely be able to tell you over the phone whether they think it is fine or if they would like to see you some time before your next appointment.
If they believed the case was serious, they would most likely tell you to head directly to the ER.
