Ella May's Birth Story

My waters broke in bed at 3am on the 12.10.13. i called the hospital and they wanted me to go in, check the baby then probably go home until things progressed. I had no contractions so cleaned up, did load of washing, the dishes and packed the car (as you do). got to the hospital and was on the monitors when my fluid colour darkened. There was now meconium in the fluid. So by 8am they had started the syntocin drip. I was told i should have baby in my arms by midday. and no later then end of the day. WRONG. was on the syntocin at full dose for 12 hours without progression. not dilated, and no natural contractions. whenever the syringe was changed my contractions would stop, or start then just disappear. it was a long process with no outcome. they said what i had is called 'failed labour' and they needed to do a csection. Because baby wasnt distressed they let me press on for 12 more hours. I tried gas as my first option for pain relief, it wasnt working with my breathing pattern, so i chose to stick with my breathing rather then what the gas needed me to. Tried morphine which did nothing. After 40 minutes of continuous contractions (no break due to level of syntocin) I had to have the epidural to continue naturally. otherwise csection it was. I had the epidural but it was patchy. it helped enough to get me through another 8 hours of labour. Finally i was dilated. I was given an hour to rest and let her come down a bit then it was time to push. baby was stuck but i got her as far as possible, then it was time for the forceps to be used. i needed and episiotomy as well. her head was safely delivered, the OB helped with shoulders then i pulled her up to my chest. Baby was posterior until i vomited during pushing which turned her minutes before delivery, despite trying painful methods for 24 hours!!! It was a long hard 32.5 hours from waters breaking to delivery they recorded my labour as 13 hours from when they could determine my first unstimulated contraction.
