Help need advice

Whew. Today I am feeling super huge...and a little uncomfortable.I am thinking it is all downhill from here!

SO..I have a dilemma with work and my transition to Michigan and can't figure out what approach to take when giving notice.

I have 8 vacation days, and a few holidays. I am a department head, so replacing me takes a little more time than the average employee, as they need someone who is ServSafe Certified, has a degree in Nutrition, etc. I have a good relationship with my boss, and obviously I am not leaving for another job...I am leaving because my husband is being relocated. So obviously, he shouldn't be mad about this.

My idea is to do one of two things:

Option 1. Give in my vacation request today, come back after 1 week of vacation (return May 5), give notice (2 weeks), and my last day will be May 19th. Its cut and dry, but I feel like they might be left in a lurch?

Option 2. Give my vacation in today just like I did, make sure my boss signs off on Monday, and then give him my 3 week notice on Monday as well verbally- but have a letter ready just in case he gets upset, which I doubt. According to our policy you lose vacation when you resign, but I hope that in this case since I am not leaving for another job, he can start making the preparations to replace me, by searching for a candidate while I am on my week vacay, and then I can train the new hire my last two weeks when I get back?

Thoughts?

I feel like it really comes down to your relationship with your boss. I think option 1 is more secure for you, in case boss flips out. You could drop a hint also, like when you're leaving for vacation let him know that you're taking a week off to have time to work out some family stuff, then come back and let him know that you and hubby have decided the move is best for the family and you'll have to put in your notice.
