Is it just me or are you also tired of hearing this sentence and all the -- excuse me: really not interesting -- details about the other person's pregnancy? It's not because I'm pregnant, that I have registered for the 'free updates on every pregnant woman in the world'. Honestly, I don't KNOW these people you are talking about! Sure, people mean well, but it's annoying nonetheless :-p
It has made me wonder, though, whether I have been doing the same thing in the past. Probably :-d It has made me realize I should start paying attention to it and stop myself if I am about to do it :-) The same thing probably holds for many other situations that people cannot really relate to themselves. If your friend has a child who has some disease, she is probably not interested in all the people you know who have a child with that same disease. If your friend's brother died, she is probably not waiting for stories about other people whose brother also died, or other people who had the same cause of death. I'm sure I've done it myself. It's just a sign that we don't really know what to say, or maybe we're just playing on the safe side by picking those topics, instead of saying the things that might actually mean something, afraid it might hurt the person. But I honestly think rambling about other people in similar situations is not very helpful, even annoying, or possibly even more hurtful than at least trying to say something personal to your friend. I'm definitely going to try to avoid that kind of talk from this point on :-)

I am definitely guilty of doing this because I don't have anything to say when someone brings up a topic! |
