my birth story

So labor did not go at all as planned for me. I thought since this was my first child that I would labor for a while and wanted to do a lot of it at home. So here is the story.
Saturday night my husband and I went out to dinner to celebrate mothers day early. Got home and still nothing. Noticed my first contraction around 9, but they were spaced pretty far apart, about every 20 minutes. Decided to try to get some sleep. Around 10 they were getting more frequent, but I was still able to sleep between them. Around 11 sleep was out of the question. So I took a shower to see if that would help. They were still about 8 minutes apart. At midnight I woke my husband up and said I needed to go to the hospital. He wasn't too sure, but I told him I had started bleeding and he decided it was time.
Got to the hospital around 1230 and checked in to the triage area. I was convinced they were going to tell me to go back home and that I wasn't far enough yet. However, when they checked me, I was already 9cm dilated. They told me that the epidural I wanted was out of the question then, it wouldn't kick in until too late.
Things moved quickly then, they rushed me back to the labor room and by that time I was 10 cm. They told me to try to hold off on pushing if I could. After about 10 minutes I had to push, there was no stopping it. After about 3 contractions of pushing, Tobias James made his appearance and had a nice scream. He was 6 lbs 15 oz and 20.5 inches. The doctor broke my water while I was pushing
I think the stitching was more painful than the labor. I had second degree tears all the was from my urethra to my anus and it took about 30 minutes to stitch up. This is when I really wanted that epidural.
I can't complain though as I had a healthy boy in my arms.
Because I labored so quickly I didn't get the antibiotics for group b. So we had to stay 48 hours at the hospital.

Your labor went SO fast! I also had a 2nd degree tear, so I know how much the recovery for that sucks. :( We also had to stay the full 48 hours in the hospital. I only had time for 1 dose of antibiotics. I'm not sure if this is standard everywhere or just at my hospital, but they require 2 doses of antibiotics before giving birth. I was anxious to get home. I actually have a chance to get a nap in my own home, unlike the hospital. In the hospital, someone was in my room basically every hour, whether it was a nurse or the midwife or meal delivery, housekeeping etc. Hopefully your recovery is still going well and that you've been able to catch up on some sleep or have finally gotten used to the sleep deprivation =P hope to hear more updates from you soon!

Thank you. Took about a week to be not in pain anymore, but now I am feeling pretty good. Although I could use more sleep.

WOW, what a fast labor for a first time mom! Congratulations. Sorry it didn't go as planned and that you tore so badly. Hope you get all the R&R you need to feel better soon.
