Q: Purple crying? Anyone else going through this?

My baby is 4 days old and since we've been home she literally cries and eats. That's it. She sleeps maybe 3hrs total in a 24hr period. I was BF until today. I have decided to give up because I'm too drained as well my breasts are bleeding when she feeds.

I'm at a loss with the constant crying. Nothing sooths her. I've read up and to me this sounds like purple crying stage. Anyone know how long it will last? I need to know that things will get better. I'm feeling depressed and like I just can't keep up with this. I've slept maybe 8hrs in the last 6 days as 2 days before she was born I had contractions at home that kept me from sleeping.

Just looking to see I'm not alone I guess....

Just a thought....If you're only 4 day post partum maybe you're milk isn't fully in? I just question that since she was much more calm after giving formula? I'm sure it is very tough and frustrating, but if you want to solely breast feed just keep at it every 2-3 hours so your milk production does fully come in and she is getting everything that she needs. Maybe you can breast feed every 2-3 hours and supplement with a little bit of formula until you have full milk production. Going more than 2-3 hours without breastfeeding or pumping could delay full milk production. She seems a bit young for colic. Is she spitting up after feeds, vomiting or arching her back? That could be signs of reflux which is uncomfortable. You're doing a great job and keep at it. Good luck.

I don't have any experience with purple crying, but I just wanted to say, "Hang in there!" Is there any way your hubby or a family member or close friend could take the baby out of the house for 3h or something just so you can get some rest? Obviously it's important that baby stay near you most of the time, but sleep deprivation is horrible and won't help you to get through this. With a bit more sleep, things often seem more manageable. *Hugs* and good luck!

Going through this now actually which is why I'm not on the site much because it can be so exhausting. I read it starts to get better by 3-4 months. Gripe water is pretty great. Are you still consuming dairy???

i didnt like the idea of giving him formula because i had been breastfeeding only, but i DID like the idea of sleeping while my mom fed the baby. after i woke up from my nap the difference was amazing!! i was shocked. he was sitting in his little chair, HAPPY! not crying! ever since then i gave him similac sensitive and he was such a happy baby. i dont know if it was an allergy to my milk or an allergy to lactose in general, but i knew this worked and i never did switch back. This may not be the problem with your baby but i thought it might help to hear my story.
