Q: How much time should be taken off after baby?

Hi all,

I wanted some feedback with how much time off should be taken after baby. I run and own a ballet studio, so I need to be realistic with what I can take off.
I will be taking 6 weeks off before the baby is due ( school holidays), then I was thinking 4 weeks after the birth?

This is my first baby so I do not know what to expect and just want to make sure I am not cutting myself too short. My hours of work are not until 3pm and I arrive home at 8pm daily.

Look forward to hearing from you, xx

Luckily I do the admin or our business so I work from our home office steering the ship while my husband does the hard yards. After 4 weeks I was still a zombie trying to adjust to the lack of sleep and round the clock feedings-I couldnt imagine having to actually leave the house to work at that stage. It took a good 3months before I felt human again!

Thanks ladies for your feedback. I will be taking the baby to work with me 4 out of the 5 days I work stleast till I am comfortable leaving her with my mother in law. I run with the school term so the 6 weeks off before is not changeable. None of you run your own business by the sounds of it? It's very difficult to balance the two but I will try

I would think you will struggle going back after just 4 weeks, you will be shattered! :)

To be honest 4 weeks seems very fast to be leaving your baby and going back to work. Taking into account that you may need to because its your business, is there anyway you cut your hours down from 5 to 3? Or have less time off beforehand so you can have more time afterwards? This special time with your child passes very quickly and time is something you cant back.

I'm a teacher due the first week of school but I have a lot of sick leave saved up. I'm having a c-section and I'm planning to take the first quarter (9 weeks). So I'll be returning to work when my baby is about 8 weeks old and I have my family and my DH's family lined up to watch her when we are at work, at least for now. We didn't want to put her in daycare that young.

I'd say it will depend on how your birth goes. I believe a c-section requires 6 weeks recovery whereas a vaginal birth can require a lot less time. You may also have a hard time going back so soon and leaving your lil baby :( I would aim for at least 6 weeks if you can. Who will watch the baby when you go back to work?...4 weeks seems quick to leave the baby....
