Q: Vitamins, vitamins. vitamins....and some fish oil....

What vitamins, supplements, fish oil, etc. are you ladies taking? My head is dizzy from making sure I am taking what I need to be.

I have been taking New Chapter's Women's Daily Multivitamin along with Omega 3s/fish oil daily....but, have to stop because of the herbs in the multi (not good for pregnancy) and the fish oil may not be mercury-free, even though it claims to be (there is mackarel in there, and I read mackarel has mercury).

I did purchase the New Chapter's Prenatal Daily Multi and Nordic Naturals pure fish oil....but damn they were expensive! $60 for a month supply! I don't want to go super cheap, but maybe I'm missing something here....!

You can also just increase your dairy intake instead of taking calcium vitamins. Milk, cheese, yogurt are rich with calcium and its a natural calcium that you can supply to your body. I love milk alot..so i drink 2-3 cups of milk a day and I dont need to take any extra calcium.

I take the nature made or Target brand prenatals. They are inexpensive and have all the same vitamins and minerals you need. I also take gummy calcium chews that you can find pretty much anywhere. $60 a month seems like a lot of money for vitamins.

I suggested calcium because it's not in the New Chapter prenatals and is in very small amounts if at all in other brands. If you don't have good stores of calcium, the baby will take it from your bones and leave you vulnerable to fragile bones and osteoporosis. Taking two vitamins really isn't that much worse than taking one if it means saving you that trouble! I take the third, Vitamin D, because my doctor advised it, showed me my blood work, and explained what a deficit of it can do. I also increased my intake of foods high in vitamin D but it's better to be safe than sorry. Bottom line-do what you need to do to make sure all your bases are covered!

I take Preferra OB plus DHA - which is prescription. But my OB said I could take any generic prescription prenatal with DHA. She recommend against taking any of the over the counter ones.

You don't need to take so many vitamins. You just need a regular prenatal vitamin that will ensure you get enough folic acid, calcium and iron, but you can skip the rest. It's always better to get all the vitamins and nutriments from real food instead of supplements.
I was taking omega-3's to regulate my cycles before I got pregnant and my doctor said it wasn't even worth it because omega-3's were mostly a trend and scientifically valid studies had shown no clear benefits... so my advice would be to have a balanced diet and stick to just your prenatal multi.

Also, most women don't get enough calcium so if you're so inclined you might consider extra calcium as well.
