Q: Pain when standing postpartum?

Hello Ladies, I'm 2 weeks postpartum and have had incredibly intense pain wen standing. Any short period of standing such as diaper changes are hardly bearable. I usually don't eat lunch because I don't want to stand in front of the fridge or microwave.

I had a 2nd degree laceration and stellate tears.

I have been buying perinal ice packs and using them on a daily basis. I was taking perocet for the first week after delivery but my prescription ran out of course. The 600mg ibuprofe (motrin) does absolutely nothing for my pain. One of the OBs in the practice prescribed me some epifoam but it does nothing either. Tuck's pads are more or less useless as well. THe only thing that helps is ice but one the icepack melts I"m back in pain again.

How long is this going to last?? I can't do anything and I'm so frustrated about being in pain constantly. The only thing I can do is lie in bed and even then the pain takes hours to go away. Then another diaper change and its back...

So far I haven't had any complications and that was about 11 years ago. It took a good 8-10 weeks before I didn't stress about going to the bathroom, although most of the time by then it was fine, it still scared me. By 4-6 I was fine for everything else - walking, sitting, standing, all that. I can definitely understand why you would be concerned about a complication with that much pain at 2 weeks out. It scared the heck out of me when I tore, and hurt more than I expected after delivery. I was terrified nothing would ever work right down there, but it eventually healed up. I would definitely keep talking to the doc, and find out what you can do. At some point (I can't remember when exactly) they had me start "exercises" - kegals basically, and I think that helped me get things back into shape and helped with some of the pulling and pinching sensations I had. I am so sorry that you are going through this - hopefully your doc will have better info for you later this we

Yes, the pain is in the perineal area. Maybe dermaplast would be better than the epifoam. The Epifoam is just hydrocortisone and pramoxine and is generally used to treat hemorrhoids. Frusratingly this was $70, nor covered by insurance and not helping.

The OB thinks I'm overdoing it but I can't imagine that no one can walk around at all postpartum, right???
He says if I'm not better by the weekend to come in and at this point I don't anticipat any improvement so I"m curious if anyone has had these issues and has had some weird complication.

After your 3rd degree laceration how did you heal down there? Was everything normal? I keep reading about people saying they had issues for months and I"m getting stressd out

I am assuming the pain is in the perineal area, not your abdomen. If that is the case after my second I had a 3rd degree laceration and one of the things the hospital gave me was a can of benzocaine spray (brand name was Dermoplast - I've seen it in both a red and blue can). That was wonderful stuff to help, and I used A LOT of it in the first couple of weeks. It was a long time ago, but by 3-4 weeks it was getting much better. I don't know if Dermoplast is better than Epifoam, but it might be worth a try as I think they are different medication and it's over the counter.

That being said, if you are in so much pain you can't stand for more than a couple minutes and the epifoam isn't helping, I would talk to the OB again. I would also call if you are having that severe pain in your abdomen. Good luck and I hope you are feeling better soonâ?¦
