Q: Renting vs buying a breast pump

So this is my first baby and I have decided to rent a breast pump instead of buy one. I really don't know if breast feeding will work out for me and the price tag of buying one brand new isn't really in our budget. I'm fine with the idea but apparently all my family and hubs are totally freaked out by renting one. I'm renting from the hospital not some lady I met on Craig's list so I don't know why they are spazzing out lol. Did any one have problems with a rented breast pump like sanitation issues?

Some insurance plans cover renting a pump (generally not buying one) for a certain amount of time. For instance, my insurance covers a pump for the first 2 months postpartum. It kind of sucks really, because if I was working, I'd really just need the pump AFTER the first 2 months, not during. But it's definitely worth a call, its saving us $120.

Depending on your insurance breast pumps should be covered. You should call and check it out. I know I'm going to Monday

I rented a pump from the hospital for 3 months. The pump was very clean, but that part doesn't usually get dirty. When I rented the pump they let me know I needed to buy the pump kit that went with it. Those parts (tubing, bottle adapter, etc) are not reused.
I rented the Medela Symphony and it was fantastic. I'd been given a Medela Pump-In-Style Advanced, and it was just ok. I could DEFINITELY tell the difference between the two. If I use a pump again I will be renting the Symphony.
