Q: Gestational Diabetes/Glucose Test

I went in for the glucose test at 24 weeks yesterday & my doctor called saying that my level came back elevated (175) and that I needed to go in for the 3 hour test on Friday.

I know that it's not the end of the world if I do get diagnosed but I can't help being upset about it. The nurse told me that it's very common for people to have the 1 hour test and have elevated levels then go back for the 3 hour test and everything be normal.

I had a hectic morning before the test yesterday, my husband's car had a flat so I had to take him to work and my son to school, and then I called my doctor's office because they never called to confirm the appointment and it turned out that they didn't even have me on the schedule so I had to come in at 15 minutes before I thought I was supposed to.

I didn't have time to eat a balanced breakfast so I ate a packet of the Special K pastry crisps in chocolate, maybe 30 minutes before the test. I'm hoping that's what made my level come back hig

Continued...Does anyone have any experience with failing the 1 hour test and passing the 3 hour test, or has anyone had gestational diabetes and can give me some advice?

Like I said, I know it's not the end of the world but I can't help being upset that something could be 'wrong' and that as long as it's monitored and controlled everything usually turns out fine...but I'm freaking out a bit about this (even though the nurse told me I shouldn't worry yet...yeah tell that to a pregnant woman and expect it not to happen!!)

I have definitely heard of both things happening - women getting a high level on the 1 hour and passing the 3 hour just fine - and eating sugary things before the 1 hour test giving a "false positive." It certainly can't hurt to cut back on sugar before the test, even for a few days before. I've also heard it's best to make the appointment first thing in the morning and not eat breakfast (although that may be required for the 3 hour test anyway). Good luck, I hope you pass the 3 hour!

The chocolate could have a been a reason for it being high but 175 is pretty up there.. They say normal is 135 and below..I ate spicy chicken and French fries right before I did mine and passed my hour glucose it was 106.. I hope you pass the 3 hour one :)

I too have heard that it is very common for the 1 hour test to be positive but the 3 hour test to be fine so don't stress yet.

It is fully possible your body was just slow in regulating and that by the 3 hour mark you would have balanced out.

Try to keep positive and wait the next test, that is the only thing to confirm at this point and odds are you will pass! If you are really concerned then try to eat less sweets and to pair sugary food with proteins to slow the digestion of the sugar down and smooth out blood sugars, but again odds are you will pass!!

I failed the 1 hour test but passed the 3 hour test with this pregnancy. I wrote a journal entry about how I felt about everything (you are welcome to read it) so I totally understand how you feel. With me, I had both tests done first thing in the morning before I ate or drank anything besides the glucose drink. I know it is hard but we have to do what is best for our babies :)

Thank you everyone for your answers and support! I am really hoping that i pass the test on Friday. I will be fasting before this one, nothing by mouth after midnight and my test is at 8:30 the next morning...so I'm keeping my fingers crossed!!

bguertner, I read your journal and I appreciate you telling me about it! I pretty much feel the same way...I've been having a lot of the "If i had only done this" or "If I hadn't eaten that" then maybe I wouldn't be in this situation.

Thanks everyone!
