Q: Anyone been told they have Group B Strep?

I had a call from my hospital last week saying that i tested positive for Group B Strep (GBS), i will need antibiotics in labour, but what is worrying me is that i had antibiotics in labour last preg due to prolonged preterm rupture of the membranes (26 weeks - 35 weeks) and my baby still got seriously ill (he nearly died) with an infection that is still unknown to us. They think my waters ruptured so early due to an infection, so this time around im worried as they are not going to be keeping an eye on things even though they KNOW i have this infection. Can GBS cause pprom or infection in the baby whilst inside me and what are the signs? Im getting a watery yellowish discharge at the moment and a few pains but i think im worrying over everything now. Im scared for my baby.

I had it when I was pregnant with my first. I was worried too, until I got to the hospital and they eased my worries. All they did was give me an IV of penicillin and I was good to go. My boy came out healthy as a horse. Just keep a very close eye on if you're losing water or not.

Try not to worry yourself; it really is so common, I think I read 20 or 25% of women have it. I have had it with every pregnancy. And I agree, take probiotics! Especially close to labor and following so that it's in your breastmilk and you can pass all that great healthy bacteria to your baby as well. It is sooooo rare to have your baby develop any complications from it, especially if you're on an antibiotic in labor. Relax and enjoy your pregnancy; take care! And many blessing to you and your lil' one! :-)

OMG thats terrible!! Poor woman! Now im even more worried as my waters started leaking at 26 weeks last preg and they rekon i have a higher chance of it happening again... plus Strep B! Thanks everyone for your replies, I think im gonna just have to interrogate my midwife or doctor so i know exactly what to expect. Spoke to GBS support today and they confiirmed that because my last baby may have had it and as i have it in this pregnancy my chances of passing to the baby have multiplied by 10. 10!! Thats a hell of a lot in my eyes. Thanks again, gotta research this as much as poss, im a worry wart as it is lol :(

You should start taking probiotics. Drinking Milk Kiefer... eating fermented vegetable like Kimchi. All the good bacterica in those foods, will start to overpower the bad bacteria you have in your body that is taking over your orifices. Sometimes eating too much sugar contributes to an over abundance of bad bacteria, and eating fermented foods/ drinks can help combat that over population. My neighbor across the street was due the same time as me, and a GBS infection infiltrated her baby through a slow leak in her amniotic sack at 36 weeks. Lets just say I avoid her at all costs because I dont want her to see me holding my 11 week old, while her arms are empty. Drink Milk keifer. Eat greek yogurt. Everyday.

I'm 40w4d, I also tested positive for GBS. The doctor told me it's not a big deal, they would just give me antibiotics during labor and everything should be fine. They're also going to check the baby after he's born for signs of infection. My doctor also told me that once the water breaks, then I should come to the hospital as soon as I can because the infection can get to the baby. So I don't think the baby can get the infection without the bag of water breaking. :)

I tested positive as well and they said it's not a big deal and common. I was told I just needed the antibiotics during labor as that was the only time the baby could get sick and that would pretty much eliminate the possibility of her getting sick from it. (I think they said something like 1 in 4000) From what I understand she can't get sick from it before birth as long as the membranes aren't ruptured for a prolonged period of time.

I tested positive with my first child nine years ago. I labored for two days, antibiotics every two hours the whole time. We stayed in the hospital for two days after to keep an eye on her and today she is as healthy as can be. I wouldn't worry, it's a fairly common thing.
