Q: Need urgent opinions - bipolar and pregnant

i have been diagnosed with bipolar about five years ago and is 16 weeks pregnant, i was at the doc on thursday, he gave me the bad news that with the fact that i had a miscarriage and the bipolar that a c-section is the most likely outcome and that it might be better for the baby and me as we dont know if i could have an episode and lose my head during normal birth as it is really emotional, i already set my mind on normal birth, really confused and need some outside opinions. Really dont want a c-section.

BiP is so different in each person but I can see why your doctor gave you that op. biP is made worse by stressful, ambiguous situations and can bring on a episode. It all depends on the individual but I bet if you told him how unhappy you were about it he would listen and let you pick your own birthing route. I am bi polor and had to have a section it was the best thing for me in some ways. It was all planned, I knew what date what time baby would be here. I didn't feel any pain during and just discomforts after. One thing I will say is though the spinal block catheter and being bed bound made me manic and irritable I was trapped on a bed till the spinal block wore off and I could have the catheter removed and that sent me into a mini episode but that was gone as soon as I could get off the bed 24 hours after.
I'm due to have my twins by section at 36 weeks I'm 23 weeks today. Xxxxx

Omg I have been bipolar for years. This is my second pregnancy and I didn't go crazy the first time during labor. Granted there are different degrees of bipolar and I am sure your Dr knows better than anyone but that is the craziest thing I have ever heard of. Look on the bright side. C sections are planned and you don't have to be in labor for hours on end.

I had my mind set on natural as well, but I was open to wat ever needed to be done, I will say that I did give birth naturally amd it was hard and tiring, it really tries ur pain tolerence. But I wld rather try natural. I never split and was up after I deliver the placenter, there r restrictions with both, like the girls said earlier they were up straight away but at the same time after u have a c section u r physically restricted for the next 6 weeks depending on how u heal. Being bipolar shldnt really effect ur delivery as they offer pain relief that relaxes u, I was also worried I'd lose the plot as my baby had passed away at. 33 weeks, I told the nurses I wanted no men in the. Room as I have been sexually abused and didn't no how I wld deal with that at my time of vlnerability. In the end I thought, I will try natural but if I get to a point where I can't do it we will move on to other alternatives, I was happy with knowing I tried that's just my opinion tho

Csection s are not that bad at all. I think they have a bad wrap, especially from women who have never had one. Getting the baby here safe and healthy is the only thing that matters.

I know a little about bipolar but I've never heard of someone having to have a c section because of it. Perhaps the people I know have a mild case of bipolar so their doctors weren't concerned, I don't know. What I do know is that you have a choice to refuse a c-section. If there is no real harm to the baby and no physical condition that would make a c-section the only route I would see if you could talk to another doctor or specialist about other options. There are many drugs out there that can mellow you right out during delivery that won't effect the baby. My first born was vaginal and I had laughing gas that made me not have a care in the world so maybe that would be an option for you. This time around my placenta is over top of my cervix so I will have a c-section and I'm not thrilled about the idea but will do whatever I have to for a healthy delivery.

Pretty much you have to just accept whatever needs to be done so that you have a healthy, living child. I do not want a C-section. I want the pain, I want to experience labor. I would never be able to feel like I actually gave birth if I had to have a C-section but if that is what I must do, I will have to suck it up and accept it. Things happen and you have to go with what is best for you and the baby.

I totally agree with redrouge. I had a c-section with my first child, and I have to say that I really enjoyed the experience. It was scheduled, so there was no worrying about when I would go into labor and what that would be like. My parents that live 6 hrs. away were able to be there because it was scheduled. I was anxious, but mostly relaxed, and there was no pain. Instead of pushing for 24 hours like my best friend did, the whole procedure was over in about 25 min. I had the spinal, the Doctor came in, and about 5 min. later I heard my baby cry and held him for the first time. It took another 15 minutes to get the staples, then I was immediately re-united with my son in recovery and breastfed him. Trust me, the experience is so amazing when you first hear and see your child that you will not care how he/she came into the world, you will be totally smitten.
