After having raised my stepson with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, i wouldn't risk even a sip! I know logically that a beer here and there probably wouldn't cause any harm, I've been seriously craving it myself, but now that i've actually had the experience of raising a child affected by such a horrible disorder, and knowing it was completely avoidable, It's just not worth the risk. I don't care how bad i want that beer, all I have to do is think about the years of hell i went through with that child and i can't even bring myself to pick up the bottle. It's a personal choice, of course, but hopefully relating my experience can help put some perspective on whether giving in to those cravings is worth it in the long run.

Well, I did some research of my own and spoke to my OB/GYN who told me a few sips of beer or a small glass of red wine twice a week is ok. And its quite ok to crave it, after we do crave a lot of things.
So to consider me selfish for having a craving is a little too self righteous! Am sure we all crave things like icecream, chocolates, greasy doughnuts, coffee and other things. All these are not good for the baby but the key is moderation, in everything we put in our bodies! So I decided to have a few sips of beer and it felt good! I have not had a craving since. So I made a choice, my choice and am very comfortable with it and I will not be judged for making that choice.
Thank you all for your comments, most were very helpful
Cheers!

No way! Wait until the baby is born. There is no reason to risk anything to your little one.

I hate to be one of "those girls" but in truth there is no real way of knowing how much alcohol is too much. Even women who have had alcohol in moderation have had babies with fetal alcohol syndrome and while it very rare for this too happen it is for this reason that doctors/midwives (intelligent ones) will tell any pregnant woman to avoid alcohol completely. Ultimately it's up to you and I don't think anyone should judge too harshly if you choose to drink here and there but it is a risk so you have to ask yourself if it's worth it. I have heard of some women drinking an ice cold non-alcoholic beer in an icy mug and saying that it was just what they needed so maybe you could try that. Google to see which ones taste closest to the real thing

I just answered a question like this the other day. One doctor says they've recently found that alcohol is the most dangerous teratogen and at ALL stages of pregnancy. A baby at any stage cannot clear alcohol well if at all. Sorry I wouldn't take a chance.

If it's something known to cross the placenta, I just ask "would I give it to a newborn?". If the answer is no I don't have it because that's essentially what you're doing. These choices are intensely personal and should be between you and your doctor-your doctor may have a better solution or may ok you for half a beer or whatever.

Baby is fine....for now. I cant even believe what you are asking. Go ahead, if you don't mind putting your baby at risk. What an immature selfish question.

Geez, I really don't care if I get mobbed here, but why in the world do people think its okay to harm their baby out of selfish reasons. Cant you wait 9 short months in order to give your baby the best start possible?

Unreal! Is the taste of beer really worth putting your baby at risk?
