Q: 1 hour glucose test

I am sure this has been asked before, and I plan on calling my doctor when it gets a bit closer to the actual test, but in about a month, I go back for the one hour test. They schedule my test at 9 am because, as the receptionist said, I need to fast. However, when the nurse was explaining everything, I feel like she said not to eat sugary stuff or drink any juices, especially orange juice. But that I could eat eggs or sausage or other high protein items. Just wondering what others have done or what your doctor had told you prior to the actual test.

I thought I would have to go in for the whole hour, too, but they gave me the drink. I hated it before so I am sure I won't like it this time, either. Especially since I have been avoiding sugary sweet things for a few years due to dieting and all that. And to top it all off, when I have the test and blood draw, I then have to go see the nurse and have the dtap shot, my rhogam shot (negative blood type for me), and a flu shot. I will be in a mood that day for sure!!!

Thanks kelliers...mine is on the 10th of October. I already have the nasty drink in the cabinet. I called today because it was driving me nuts and the nurse told me to have a scrambled egg or two so that I have something in my stomach. She said if I fasted, I could get sick from the drink, like your's told you. So guess I will get up and fix some eggs that day. :)

Mine said protein only-no carbs. Carbs are sugar. So, pretty much eggs or meat. She said if you don't eat you will likely get sick from the disgusting drink. I'm NOT looking forward to it! I have to schedule mine for the end of the month.

Thanks ladies. I had the test with my daughter, but that was 6 years ago and I don't really remember much. The doctor is about 40 minutes away with morning traffic, plus we have to take our daughter to school so if I eat, it will have to be something quick. I don't like eating breakfast anyway, but I do it for the baby. Hopefully, when I call the doc in a few weeks, they can let me know what to do. Thanks for the input! :)

I had my test at 4pm and i was told to eat normally throughout the day just not to eat or drink anything that contains sugar...other then that i could eat anything...i even ate yogurt for breakfest that did contain a little bit of suger...well it didnt effect the test at all. I totaly passed the 1 hour test that I did that afternoon. So basically just do not eat or drink anything that has sugar...i never heard anything about fasting before a 1 hour test ( i also spoke to several of my friends)...so i dont know why you need to fast...i heard you only need to fast if you are doing the 3 hour test...

Eating is definitely going effect the test. Your blood sugar responds to food - even high protein food. The one hour test doesn't involve taking a baseline blood sugar level - just the one after the glucose drink has been drunk, so you can certainly eat beforehand but you should be cautious because if your blood sugar level is already high the glucose drink is going to push it higher. Theoretically, if you have fasted beforehand your blood sugar level will start from a normal level and not be influenced by what you have eaten that day.

If you are going to eat - keep it low carb and high protein. Your blood sugar level won't spike after eating those types of foods. But it will go up. I would definitely not eat within 2 hours of your test.

Overall, if you want a true result - I wouldn't eat before your test.

My doctor told me to eat a couple of hours before the test, said to make sure nothing sugary/not a lot of carbs....but I was running late that morning so I didn't get a chance to eat anything and ended up failing the one hour test and having to do the dreaded 3 hour test which I passed just fine. I feel like if I had eaten like he told me to I wouldn't have failed the first one. I heard so many different things though, some people fail the first one and blame it on eating beforehand. I think that the chances of failing the first one are so high I wouldn't concern myself too much with it since its the least accurate.
