I take 1000 mcg of folic acid as prescribed by my ob. You should at least take 800mcg. Folic acid decreases the chances of having a baby with Neural Tube Defects such as Spina Bifida. All women in their reproductive years are recommended to take a folic acid supplement, not just pregnant women. Talk to your doctor about any concerns you have.

Yeah, here in the states they say at least 800 if pregnant but you should also check your homocysteine levels to check ahead and see if your blood says you need more. I've done a specified test due to my background with miscarriage and kids having autism and I have a methylation deficiency which almost have the population has which means I have to take at least 4 mg of it possibly more. I've done lots of research of course from the naturapath types and it is said that it's hard to take enough to be toxic to us as our body just excretes what we don't need so if you are talking about a few mcgs you really don't have anything to worry about. It will be very beneficial to you and baby.

400 is actually low for a prenatal. Most have 800 so if you took an extra 400 I think that'd be just fine! Run it by your doctor or a nurse but you definitely want to be sure you're getting enough and it'd take a whole lot to have too much.
