Q: Trisomy 21

What are normal odds of baby having trisomy 21? Went to the doctor today to get my NT results. He said mine were 1 in 935 of baby having trisomy 21. I am 33, is this a normal value? Kinda stressed out because he didn't really explain. He did say I wouldn't need to have an amnio though. So that is positive right?

The NT ultrasound can't tell for certain whether your baby is affected. However, it can help you decide whether or not to have a diagnostic test. so, if your doc said "you dont need an amnio" than that means your results were good enough that he's not concerned!

i did an NT scan too. i just wanted the ultrasound, i didnt care about the results lol. but my doc just told me my result was negative for downs and trisomy 18. i didnt get a number or anything.

I know two women who had there results come back less than 1 in 10!! Both babies checked out fine! There is a massive margin for error in these tests but it's also a better way than doing an amino because most would.opt not to, I'm 29.and min came back 1 in 16000 it doesn't make your baby more likely it's just a guude. Relax now you have a healthy bub on board!

Thank you so much for your response! After experiencing 3 miscarriages, pregnancy has been stressful enough already. That being said, I would love my baby no matter what, but I must say I am relieved. I was very frustrated with my doc, like I said, all he told me is I wouldn't need an amino. Thanks again for removing some unneeded stress!

Any result on IPS screening over 1 in 200 is considered screen NEGATIVE for Trisomy 21 (Down's). So congratulations on a negative result (which is what you want on a test like this)!

I'm surprised he didn't go over your results in more detail! I'd be frustrated!

The Mount Sinai page has some good information about the tests - http://www.mountsinai.on.ca/care/pdmg/tests/ips
