Q: Severe heartburn and reflux at 24 Weeks! Help!

This past week I have been suffering from really awful heartburn and reflux.....the kind that has now given me a really sore throat! I know what caused it (eating too many tomatoes and large portions), but now that I've got it, it seems everything I try to eat triggers it.

Does anyone have any experience with this, and could anyone suggest meals/food that I could eat which would help make it go away, or which at least, won't make it worse? Thanks so much! :)

I have had had reflux for years which all started because of gallstones. I had my gallbladder removed when i was about 23 and since then can't eat alot of fatty foods or foods that are too rich. My doc gives me Omeprazole to help (which it does), but one thing that works for me (bizarrely) is apple juice, it seems to calm my tummy down. I also find that eating a little amount regularly helps to abate the acid coming out of your stomach a little. Try not to eat too much before bedtime too, and massage your tummy, start between / below your ribs where it probably feels hard and tender and push down gently, you might find you have alot of wind, but it's better than being in pain! :D

@miniray - thanks for those suggestions! :) I was quite surprised to see you mentioning the two products (Rennie and Gaviscon) that my doc suggested/prescribed to me yesterday, until I saw that you're 'just across the border' from us. I'm guessing that Rennie must be the European version of Tums. To be honest, I'd much rather take something like that, than any kind of inhibitor drug. Hopefully that, combined with smaller meals including starchy carbs, as well as staying up-right after eating, will do the trick!

p.s. It's a good thing hubby is quite skilled in the kitchen and can make his own meals if necessary.....wouldn't want to the poor thing to have to live on my bland and repetitive diet!! ;) lol

I was hoping the old wive's tale was true too, but our little guy came out almost bald!! For me even the mint was painful and Gaviscon stopped working for me so I went back to basics and took Rennie, they worked great and you don't have to worry about how many you take. Otherwise, I always made sure that I ate something starchy with every meal, to absorb the extra liquid/acid. I did start to feel like my diet became quite limited towards the end, but whatever you can do to stop the burn has to be better than the constant sore throat.

I've had massive heartburn with all three of my pregnancies. This one is a girl also. It might be true lol idk as the only boy I was pregnant with was a missed miscarriage about 5 years ago.

Thank you so much for the tips! :) I don't think we can get Tums here 'across the pond', but I'll have a look at our local drugstore to see if they have anything similar. I was hoping to get this reflux under control without taking any 'medication' but since none of the herbal/holistic remedies have helped so far, I think it's time to pull out the big guns! ;) I have my usual doctor's check-up tomorrow, so hopefully she'll be able to prescribe me something safe to take.

I love the idea of taking peppermints! Haven't tried that yet...but will definitely give it a shot, thanks! :)

Every pregnancy I have had severe heartburn. It's even worse when I'm pregnant with girls. I usually take TUMS but I have discovered this pregnancy peppermints help a lot! I believe the old wives tale, the more heartburn, the more hair your baby is born with. My first daughter was born with a head full of curls, it wasn't as bad with my boys but now again I have it really bad. Try staying upright after meals as well, at least for an 1-2 hours.

Try taking a lot of tums throughout the day. It will help some until you can get in for your next appt.
