To labor or not to labor...
By Jessie22 » Posted Sep. 9, 2014 3:33am - 395 views - 3 comments

I know I haven't been on in a very, very long time but since I am yet again awake at an ungodly hour I figured I might as well get caught up! Mostly, I think I need to complain and find some way to get this out without sounding foolish or being judged...

I can't actually tell if I'm just having a round of indigestion, hunger, relatively frequent Braxton Hicks contractions, or actual early labor!

I was woken up around 1:30 this morning to a relatively painful contraction - meaning, not just the usual stomach tightening of Braxton Hicks, but also feeling it down really low in my pubic area like a really intense period cramp. Over the next...well...2 hours now...I've had a few more (I wasn't timing them since I kept trying to go back to sleep) mixed in with waves of thinking I was just really hungry, a few moments of thinking I needed to use the bathroom, and just overall discomfort.

I told myself if I still couldn't sleep by 3am I'd get up and eat, which is what I just did. A nice bowl of oatmeal and raisins with some orange juice (don't ask me why, but I have been CRAVING OJ at the end of this pregnancy! Despite the heartburn it inevitably gives me, I still love it). As I was sitting here typing and eating, I had another one of those painful/uncomfortable contractions like I just described.

Here's my dilemma - I have had Braxton Hicks contractions since about 18-20 weeks. They've picked up in frequency and intensity as we've gotten passed 36 weeks, but at my 39 week checkup earlier today (er, yesterday now) I was still 50% effaced, 0cm dilated, and baby girl was nice and high. I know that means squat in terms of impending labor, but this whole increase in frequency and intensity with nothing happening is starting to get annoying.

One side of my brain (the hopeful side) says if I wait a few more hours, I'll get my answer on whether or not this is actually the start of labor...and then the other side says, "if you have to ask..."

So, I know this rambling journal entry at 3am isn't all that great, but I just needed to throw this out into the void of all the other pregnant ladies and new moms out there. Thanks for listening, mamas!

I don't think there is anything more frustrating than the last few weeks of pregnancy. Its like waiting for that bus to a great party but you have no idea when it will come, just that it will and every engine sound could be its approach. (How's that for a morning analogy?) I am not looking forward to going through those final weeks again, I cried enough the first time.
Sounds like you're body is warming up with more than just braxtons and thats a good sign. Trouble is everyone is so different I could give you some advice and still be way off mark lol! I guess just keep your timer ticking to see if they are becoming more frequent.
I know mine 'is this it' cramps were getting closer together and I went right off food even though it wasn't overly painful and then they came every 5 mins and got stronger and stronger.
Fingers crossed you get that answer soon so either you can get going or get sleeping. Good luck!
