Found a Doula, 12 Week Update!
By mogchi » Posted Apr. 25, 2015 9:22pm - 474 views - 6 comments

We interviewed 2 doulas yesterday, and it was so hard making a decision. I had to make a pro and con list. We kept changing our minds and everything. We almost went with the younger less experienced one who we felt more at ease with, but settled on the older more experienced one that we felt we would feel at ease after more appointments. For anyone reading who doesn't know what a doula is they are basically a person to support you before, during and after birth. People who have doulas have faster deliveries, are less likely to have c-sections, and less likely need pitocin or epidurals. We are first time parents, and we have never been through this so we both felt the need for extra support. I want to do all natural labor and in order to achieve that goal I need someone to give me confidence, otherwise I will be worried that this or this isn't normal etc.

Symptoms:

itchy breasts
acne breakouts
sharp vaginal pain
nipples darker
backache

Cravings: smoothies, juices, healthy foods, snickers
Aversions: gluten free bread UNLESS there is peanut butter on it

Got new books! Pregnancy Day by Day (my favorite), Baby Manual, Pregnancy-Child Birth-Newborn

Also got a belly band so I can wear my normal jeans for now and a friend gave me her c-pillow which I love!

I still think I am having a boy! We shall see! I can't wait to find out!

Yay! That's really exciting. :) I've thought about getting a doula. So glad all is going well.

Glad you found someone. One of my midwives in training happened to be a trained doula, and she was great. Fortunately, I had lots of people for support, so I didn't feel the need to hire anyone. I figure, get the information, security, whatever, that makes you feel confident. Good decision. I wish we could plan and enact all of our plans, but being educated and having an advocate will help.

I am sure it will not go as planned either, but I feel like I would totally chicken out about the no epidural if I didn't have someone there with me telling me I can do it. This way it totally increases my chances! I also will feel less scared, because it's a pretty scary thing....especially if I have to go into surgery! Statistically speaking it does lower your chance of that though, so I will take it :) haha.

I had the support person we call them a student midwife she's in her last year of her 4yr degree. It's wonderful to have that person attend your appts: and to be there through the whole journey with you. Unfortunately it doesn't determine how your birth plan will go as I'm sure your've read mine as where're friends on here. You have to have a complete open mind when it comes to a birth plan because 9x out of 10 it will not go exactly as you want or have planned. It really is a great thing having that support though :-)

We absolutely adored our doula. She will be at all future births too.... Even when we r more experienced with th whole labor thing. She was wonderful during labor and since ours is also a lactation consultant she has been a god send after birth for breastfeeding support
