Having a cesarean.
By Mrsfingerscrossd » Posted Nov. 22, 2015 5:58pm - 294 views - 4 comments

I had my first appointment with my hospital ob on Friday. We discussed my birth options and he said given my first was born my emergency cesarean due to failure to dilate and my sister had the same thing earlier this year, my chances of giving birth naturally were less than 50%. So that sealed the deal. I'm being booked in for an elective cesarean in early June. I'm not particularly upset about it. I said i'd really prefer not to go through what i did the first time again.

The only issue is it took a few days for my milk to come in last time but the ridiculous 'breast is best' fanatical nurses refused to let me bottle feed my baby so she cried and cried the whole time from hunger. This was despite the fact she had jaundice and the way to get rid of that is by lots of fluids. It made it far worse than it should have been. I refuse to let that happen again. I'm paying for a private hospital and no one is going to tell me what to do this time. If baby needs formula he or she is going to get it!!

I was very impressed with the ob. He even did a scan and said he would every app just for my piece of mind. My next app with him is early Jan.

Ugghhh I hate when nurses do that! I was lucky and ours were accepting of whatever decisions we made, but my best friend had nurses trying to convince her to breastfeed her second (she had a TERRIBLE time trying to breastfeed)... she said "nope, we're using formula" and after some clear looks of disdain from the nurse she was asked what brand. When she told them she was using a store brand instead of a name brand, she got another nasty look. It was ridiculous. You do what's best for you and your baby. Don't let anyone convince you otherwise. Doesn't sound like you will let them anyway. So happy things are going well for you! :)

My doctor wants me to decide one way or another before I Get too far gone (they didn't set a specific date). But, if I choose VBAC and then want to change my mind farther down the road because I'm miserable, they said they won't let me. Unless I choose a cesarean before a certain point, I won't get one until 41 weeks with no sign of labor or if there's an emergency.

I had heard a lot of hospitals were reluctant to encourage VBAC in any circumstances and with a large baby, that's more so. When will you have to decide for sure? My ob says they like to schedule it for before 37weeks to lessen the risk of going into labour. Stairs would have been a hige issue for me last time so i understand your concern! Luckily we only have the one story. Double story houses aren't that common here.

I had a cesarean as well (not emergency but I cut it close because my son's cord was wrapped) and, while VBAC is an option for me since it wasn't a problem created by my body, I have a feeling I'll end up having to have another. My placenta is low and baby girl is measuring two weeks ahead (if she gets too bit, they may not want to risk a vaginal birth since I have never had one). That's just in my last visit, I have another fourteen weeks of time for more issues to come up. My husband wishes I'd just go ahead and schedule it but he just likes to know specific dates. The surgery wasn't so bad, but I have a new house with quite an impressive staircase and that was what I remember being the worst last time (going up and down stairs). I'm sure it is a comfort knowing exactly when your baby will arrive though.
