Q: Natural Childbirth vs Epidural!

Sooo...DH and i watched "The business of being born" and i am seriously considering going all natural this time around.
This is my 3rd and last and i have had epidurals with my other two. I really wanna experience that post-birth buzz i saw! Also the intense euphoric bonding!
Have any of you ladies done it both ways?
Which is better?

My 1st child birth experience was horrid, but I learned from my mistakes. There were so many issues with my OB, basically he had a god complex. I ended up being over due and being induced, in pain and distressed during labor, I requested epidural after my water was broken, took a while to get it, baby was unstable because of me being in distress made her even more unstable. But all ended being ok after all the scares. So my second time around I was more relaxed because I had an awesome OB. She induced me right on due date because she feared that if we wait any longer it would be a repeat of the 1st delivery, I asked to be given epidural as soon as I am cleared for one, no need to ask me, just doit. And labor was smooth the second time around, no fighting with the doc, no distress, very little pain and best of all I had a happy, strong 8 lbs baby boy. And I was in tip top shape to breastfeed right away :) Btw my 1st born was a 9.10lbs baby girl, blue and didn't cry for the 1st 30 mins.

I watched it too (on Youtube) and thought it was fascinating!! I also want to do a natural birth - I spoke to my midwife about it. She says that in hospitals, with drs/obgyns, the epidural rate is about 90% ! That shocked me. She said it's very very rare her patients end up needing epidurals, but epidurals (and c-sections for that matter) do have their place and the latter can save lives. I think the reason patients of midwives don't have epidurals is that the midwife remains with them all through labor, not taking off to deal with other things and checking on them every hour or so....it is after all their speciality and they know tricks and ways to alleviate the pain and help women cope. I really hope I can get through it without an epi, but I am open to other methods of pain releif if needed. The thought of being numb and paralyzed teriffies me. Same with having a dopy baby who won't want to eat.

I think Natural Childbirth sounds like a really amazing idea. I was induced with Pitocin after I fail to dilate and I don't think the pain from pitocin was something that I can endure. I wanted to do it natural the first time but ... it was just way too difficult. This time around, I am going to be smart and get the Epidural before the massive pain hits :)

It's such a viscious cycle, the pitossin/stress of baby, you know? I loved the documentary and am totally going to try to do it totally drug free. It's horrible how the position the doctor's have you lay is actually the worst way to be.

That's a great documentary! I actually first saw it before we were even pregnant. It's very inspiring and I think every pregnant women could benefit from watching it. Though, the one thing you learn is, as much as you can prepare, sometimes baby has other plans!
