Q: Possibility of misdiagnosed blighted ovum at 9 wks? Advice needed.

This is my first pregnancy, and we had been TTC for just short of a year. I am 9 wks, and went in for my first ultrasound yesterday with DH and the worst happened. They only could see the empty sac on the ultrasound.

I am going in again next week to have another ultrasound to confirm, but my Dr. is already prepping me to do the D&C immediately after. I am just wondering what the chances are that there IS a baby in there. I would never forgive myself if I had the D&C only to find out that there was a fetus that they missed, and I have read stories online of other women who have found healthy babies at 12 weeks because they waited to have the D&C.

I don't know what to do. I want to move on, but part of me wants to be 100% sure. Should I let it happen naturally? How long should I wait? Should I get a second opinion? Please help. Not only am I devastated and grieving, I don't think I am in any state to be making such a serious decision without some concrete evidence, ri

First of all I'm so sorry :( I've just lost my baby a couple of weeks ago at 7 weeks so I totally understand. Is there any doubts with your dates? possibility that you may be earlier?

Was it an internal scan? On a vaginal scan the earliest you will usually see an embryo is 6weeks 4 days, with a heartbeat. I'm unsure of the dates if it was an abdominal ultrasound.

Where are you from? I'm in Australia and I was told by the emergency dept doctor that there is no way they are allowed to perform the D and C unless they are 100% sure that the pregnancy has failed. Do you want to have a D and C if you have lost the baby? I had one because I just couldn't handle doing it on my own but the doctors did give me the choice of natural, d and c or tablets called Misoprostol. Talk it through with them and make sure that you make the right choice for you. I'm so sorry I can't be of more help. Look after yourself

Point is, the diagnosis you were given could be wrong and it could be right. I would advise you wait for at least a week or two to be doubly sure (as long as there is no risk to your health) and have a repeat u/s before going ahead with the d&c. If my friend had had it then, she would have destroyed her gorgeous baby boy who is now 2 months old. Keep the faith up hun, you are in my prayers

I am so sorry that you are in this situation, it is truly a terrible decision to make. I haven't experienced anything like that before but i can share my sister's and my friend's experience with you. When my sister was in the early stages of her preg, she went for a u/s one day and all they saw was an empty sac. No one slept that night, we were all devastated but i told her to get a repeat scan the next day and don't you just know it, the baby was there. For my friend, she missed her period for weeks, had no positive on pregnancy tests and finally went in for a u/s. Diagnosis was blighted ovum and she was asked to do the d&c immediately on health grounds. When she broke down in tears and couldn't stop, she was then allowed to go home and she didn't do anything for 2 weeks. She was that much devastated. When she went back for another u/s 2 weeks later, her baby wasn't just there, the little one was already 10 weeks old. Funny how the sac could have appeared empty at 8 weeks.
