Q: Cut my hours at work

I live in New york. I work for a privately owned hotel at the front desk as well as take care of the man who owns the hotel (its a family business). I get one paycheck for both jobs. I have not called in sick or asked for a day off bc of my pregnancy and today i was scheduled to take care of the old man. Upon arriving to work, I walked in to find my boss's wife, the girl I was relieving from her shift and a new girl (who I didn't even know about). My boss's wife says "this is susan, she is going to re[lace you on fridays because you are too tired to work now that you are pregnant and you are working at the desk too so its too much" on top of this she wants me to train her!!! She never asked me if I needed time off and I haven't taken time off. Is this pregnancy discrimination or am I just buggin out?? Do you think I can do anything about this since its only one day? I dont know what to do and im really REALLY pissed off.... HELP!

Perhaps they are wanting you to train someone that way when you take fmla they have someone reliable to cover you. But to take away for day at work is not appropriate unless you asked them. Which you obviously didn't. I would talk with them. Tell them you plan to work up til delivery for as long as you can and expect to be treated the same and have your same hours. If they do not give you your hours back I'd definately file for partial unemployment because that is techniqely what they are doing to you. I would also definately look into the law also. I don't think what they are doing is legal at all. They can't cut your hours to hire someone to prepare for your fmla. Good luck.

I am from Canada, so im assuming laws are different, buit if you were here you would definetly have a case against them. If someone pulled that on me i could go to employment standars and report them and get my job back in the same fashion as before my pregnancy. I dont know what resources you have but definetly contact your government agency and ask what your rights are!!! Good Luck!

She isn't worried about me. she is acting like she is when in reality she is worried about having coverage for her husband. I do understand where she is coming from but it is wrong. Its discrimination. I feel singled out and awful. I come to work, do my job, dont call in sick and havent shown a change in my work. There is a girl who works one day a week and can never stay for her shift... its a 5 hour shift and she leaves 3 hours early but she isnt looking to replace her... just the pregnant girl... and I have been working for them for 4 and a half years!!! I am so upset. I need the money and she is a very difficult person and it is really hard to talk to her but I guess I will have to try. I just dont feel like I should have to fight to keep my job bc it IS CRAP... I dont have a lot of money and her doing this cuts $100 off my check every week which I need now more than ever... UGGH!!

I'm not 100% of the exact laws, but that seems like it is against something. They could ask you I'm guessing if it's too much, but I don't think they can take away your hours without you saying you can't handle the job... Maybe they thought they were being helpful to you, but it still isn't right. I would talk to them or look more into the laws on this...

It sounds pretty messed up to me. I can't believe she didn't talk to you about it first. That's complete crap. I'm not sure what you can do about it, but I think you should possibly try to talk to her. I don't know the dynamic (or if talking to her will even help). It might be worth looking into. I'm sorry that happen to you:-(

another important thing I forgot to add is that my work has not suffered AT ALL due to my pregnancy. I still am capable of doing all of the same things I was doing before I was pregnant AND I have been doing it for 4 months now without a flaw...
