Q: Epidural Vs. Natural?

I'm 8 months pregnant and the whole time was thinking about having an epidural, but now I've been reading things, that make me reconsider natural. I'm just wondering about your experiences either way, since this is my first I really don't know what to expect.

Personally I think an epidural should be a last resort. There are numerous other pain meds you can take before that point. I am going to try natural too but I will sooner go for the gas then something more severe.

I would def keep an open mind because like the other ladies have said you just dont know. I had all intentions with my daughter to go natural and everyone thought I was insane. My husband kept insisting that they made drugs for a reason and I should advantage but I was like no no no needless to say I was induced and I had the most painful back labor that natural child birth went out the window quick and I got the epidural. However, it wore off and the fear of back labor set in and I begged for more. In the end I wound up having natural delivery anyway because when the epidural wore off and they administered more they gave me too much and I literally could not push so we had to wait some more and by the time I had my daughter it wore off and I have to admit it was very painful. This time around I will not be induced I plan on waiting till this one is ready cause I found out later that inducing make labor contractions more painful and I plan on getting the epidural as soon as I can

I'm planning on starting naturally, if need be waiting till 5.5 cm to get an epidural if the pain is that bad so that I lower the chances of really slowing my labor down. I'm also open to trying other pain options first before going to an epidural that won't slow down labor. I plan to take it hour by hour and am preparing to be proud of myself no matter what option I choose. If I have a bearable labor and can get to 8-9 cm dilated without an epidural, I'll totally go for it! But I also don't want to be upset with myself if I don't make it.

I have had 2 naturally and plan to have this one natural too, but like the previous poster said keep an open mind, you never know what kind of labor you will have. Good luck!

My answer would be to keep an open mind :) You don't really know your pain tolerance or what kind of labour you are going to have until it actually happens. I planned with my first pregnancy to do it naturally but my labour ended up being really painful back labour so I got the epidural and it was amazing! Lol I've read things too about the epidural but honestly it worked great for me no complications what so ever. This time around if the pain gets too extreme again I will def be getting the epidural! If you plan on a natural birth having a mid wife/doula can be very helpful since they are trained to help with different methods of pain relief for a natural birth. Hope this helps good luck!!
