Q: has any body tested positive for the 2nd trimester downs screening at 20 weeks?

I had a blood test done at 20 weeks and it has come back as high risk for carrying downs syndrome. Ultra sound scan showed no abnormalities.... anyone had this?

e trying to focus on the positives. I TOTALLY understand about this taking away some of your joy. I felt that way for a while too, but I'm back to feeling excited again. I wish you the best of luck!

I refused to have this test for fear of false positive which I read was very common. If there was no visiable signs on the ultrasound scan then I would try not to worry. And all you have to think is, has it changed your mind about wanting the baby?If not then does it matter? I wouldn't worry and just enjoy your pregnancy. Good Luck x

Gosh 12 Nov is just around the corner, please would you be so kind as to let us know how you got on. I understand life will be hectic in the beginning with a new bub! Good Luck and will be thinking of you on the day.

We have since been for another scan, one with more detail and Dr is happy, there are no signs physically on the scan, my odds are 1 in 187. I choose not to have the amnio based on Drs advice as he feels it is not necessary. We have 9 weeks left today (caeser booked for the 7th Jan) and I no on the day I will be very tearful (nerves will have set in) as I have read stories similar to mine that everything pointed fine with exception of the blood work and they turned out to be the one. Having said that I also have put it to the man upstairs and I am trying to have faith that all will be good. We will love our little squirt more than anything no matter what form he arrives in.

Thanks again to you all for replying, much appreciated
x

Which blood test was it? There is often no physical characteristics that you can spot in an u/s so it doesn't necessarily mean that there isn't Downs. Thats why they do the NT scan at around 12 weeks because thats when they can view it but after 14 weeks it won't show up. I had the Maternity 21 blood test done at 12 weeks because my NT scan was on the higher end of normal (3.1). This blood test is 99% accurate. Our's came back positive for Downs. Since then I've had 3 u/s because they are checking the heart. They haven't spotted any other signs of Downs, but they said this doesn't change our risk as this blood test is so accurate. BUT if you did the QUAD screening, the blood test on that is much less accurate. I think they told me it was 83% accurate. I have heard of many cases where this was a false positive. I'm not trying to stress you more by this, so hopefully I'm not. I just wanted to share my experience in this. I was a huge stress for us at 1st, but we've come to terms & ar

I also think there would be signs on the ultrasound, but your advanced maternal age increases your risk of having a baby with downs syndrome, i hope i didnt offend you. wishing you the best, I know alot of people with downs syndrome friends/family and they are very capable of living full lives.

thanks very much... it did come as a bit of a shock, must say it is never far from my mind, our doc said nothing sinister was on any of our important scans to indicate that there was any problems, which keeps on the more positive side of life. Oh boy we still want this little man, no matter what the outcome, having said that it has taken away a little of the excitment and makes the day of delivery kinda bitter sweet... if you get my drift.
