Q: Wine during labor??

I just watched "A Baby Story" and the women in labor was told by her midwife to have a couple of glasses of wine and get in the tub while she was laboring at home... anyone ever heard of this? this women went on to have a natural delivery without any drugs (i know mixing alcohol and drugs wouldnt be good)
I also plan on having a natural birth, and a glass of wine or 2 sounds great to relax in early labor.. thoughts? would it actually be safe? has anyone done this ?

Oh and CPS would NEVER be called! I worked in this industry for years, so I know. It's actually kind of silly that was said!

Wine is totally safe during pregnancy so I can't imagine why this would be an issue?! The baby only gets 3% of what you drink and if you stick to the only one drink rule that OB's recommend, then you should be perfectly fine. I don't understand the dramatic responses on here? If it helps you relax, then I say go for it! I know many woman who have had home births and had a glass of wine to help them relax during labor, and I think it's nothing to be ashamed of as it isn't dangerous. The last response is only true if you were actually drunk and clearly your not that kind of mom :-) So that's my 2 cents. I pray you have a safe and healthy labor; best wishes!

As someone planning on having a homebirth water birth, I would not do this because:

1. If I had to be transferred (ie taken to a hospital) CPS would most likely be called on me when they realized I had alcohol in my system.

2. If I had the baby, and then hemorraged at home the alcohol would work as a blood thinner, and I would be more likely to die from blood loss then if I hadn't had anything to drink.

3. If any of the alcohol passed the placenta to the baby during labor/birth, and the baby had any swelling of the brain and/or any birth trauma, the baby would be more likely to suffer severely then mildly, due to the blood thinning affects of alcohol.

i actually found a little more info on the topic... apparently some midwives suggest a glass of wine in early labor in order for you to sleep better and rest while you can, to be prepared for the long hard road ahead (full on labor) and its not recommended in actual labor, which makes sense.

I have never read about this, when I think back to when I was in labor I am sure wine would have made me throw up, and I had a natural drug free birth.

I haven't heard of this "relaxation method." It doesn't sound wise, particularly if you plan to breastfeed immediately/shortly after delivery.

Baby also drinks the same wine you are drinking.....this is a no brainer. I wouldnt do it. Would you put a glass of wine in your baby's bottle after it is born? Eek.

I would say its a bad idea, but thats just me. My thought is what if you natural delivery doesnt go as planned? What if you ended up in the operating room for a c-section for some reason and they need to give you drugs but you have been drinking a little vino lol. ;)

I want to try for a drug-free birth and have been reading up on it (although I'm well aware alcohol *is* a drug). I haven't read anything about drinking wine yet, but I don't think I would as I am allergic to wine (gives me severe migraines) and as monroezelda said, after a 9 month booze hiatus I can't imagine what 2 glasses would do :/

I have heard it, apparently red wine can induce labour :/ personally after not drinking for 9 months 2 glasses would make me very drunk, I don't wanna see my baby through beer goggle eyes lol.
