Q: Fibroids and early labor?

I found out at 8 weeks that I have 2 small uterine fibroids. I know they can put you 2-3weeks early which is ok for the baby, but how often does this happen? Is it always, 50%, rarely? I can't seems to find any stats. My mom is trying to figure out the best time to put in her vacation to be with me, and trying to factor in all possibilities. Also, my entire immediate family was early. My dad was 3 moths, everyone else 1 month.

Many factors come into play and even though I couldn't tell you an exact answer, I can tell you that fibroids can get larger from the pregnancy hormones which also causes the uterus to grow as well. Since your fibroids are small you probably won't have an issue during your pregnancy and chances are excellent that they will not cause you to go into pre-term labor. Your family history may cause you to do that, but your fibroids most likely won't have a hand in that. Another question that comes into play is where the fibroids are located. If they are anterior, posterior, or around the fundus and they stay along the smaller side, then you're good. If they grow unusually large in those areas your child may suffer from fetal growth restriction. If the fibroids are close to the cervix and decide to grow large they could block the cervix and eliminate any chance of vaginal delivery. Just remember that fibroids are super-common & their growth slows down in later pregnancy. Don't worry! :-)
