Q: Does everyone have painful contractions when they go into labour

Just a curious question I'm only 8 weeks and I'm already starting to wonder what child birth will feel like it scares me cause people say things like times period pain by 1000 and stuff like that but truth is I've never had period pain like all I get is a twinge or a slight back ache not even enough to take Panadol . I've only been pregnant once before but I lost the baby at 11weeks apart from the emotional pain of losing a baby I had no physical pain what so ever. I want to know if there are other ladies like me who don't have any period related pain and were u fortunate enough to not have extreme labour pain

Oh love! Dont worry yourself about how painful it will be, it will make you scared and anxious about giving birth (which believe it or not will effect your labour). I gave birth to my first baby 7 weeks ago and it was such an amazing experience, yes it hurt, but it was good pain. Early labour was not very painful at all, just cramps. After my water broke it definatly got more painful, but i was able to cope using the birthing pool and the gas. When it came to pushing i couldnt even feel the contractions anymore and stopped using the gas. It burns as bub comes out but then baby is born and you feel so proud of youself that you just did that. Read as much information as you can, trust your midwife and trust your body, remember we were made to do this. :)

I had the exact fear as you, this is my first baby as well. First, do some research and decide what type of birth you want, then go from there. I am treating birthing my son the same way I'd treat running a marathon- lots of preparation ahead of time for the best possible outcome.

I think that everyone is different. For me (I was induced at 38 weeks and 6 six days) the pain was like period cramps (a burning stabbing pain in my lower abdomen that radiated into my back). They were uncomfortable but doable until my water broke at 7 cm. Then I asked for the epidural as it was getting really hard and down right painful. I am pregnant now with my second and am already having some contractions. The good news is that there seems to be some amnesia that accompanies chidlbirth so no matter what, most moms are willing to do it again :). I am not afraid at all this time around!

I had my first baby a month ago. I was scared too about childbirth. In the beginning of my labor, contractions weren't that painful, kind of like period pain (feels like cramps when you have diarrhea) When I hit the transition stage that's when everything got worse (on top of that I was hooked up on pitocin, which makes contractions stronger). Contractions were unbearable then the epidural saved me :)

I had a miscarriage at 10 weeks and the miscarriage was like very strong period cramps. When I got pregnant again and had my daughter in December, the contractions felt exactly like miscarriage. Very strong period cramps. It was not painful, just uncomfortable. I received the epidual when I was 4cm and I never really had any bad pain at all. Delivery went very smooth and it was all very easy. Please do not be afraid, especially this early. Not everyone has a bad birthing experience. In fact I enjoyed mine so much I am already wanting to work on baby #2!!!

Early labor isn't painful for a lot of women, but the transition stage it the hardest. I did both of my children without pain relief and they really did hurt for about an hour and 15 minutes of that hour was so hard I wanted to give up, it felt like someone grabbed my spinal cord and was trying to rip it out. But even though I didn't have an epidural I was on pitocin as I was induced so the pitocin could have made my contractions harder than true natural labor pains?? Every women is different and labors differently, I don't know if I would describe labor pains like period pains but it does hurt but nothing to be scared of. Its a good kind of pain and if it were easy then I don't know if we would appreciate our children so much :)

I have never heard of a woman who didn't have a painful labor.

I don't have painful cramps during periods but labor was pretty painful for me! I didn't get an epidural or any medication....To me delivering the placenta (afterbirth) was more painful than the labor/delivery of the baby. That's just me though. It's different for every person.

As you progress in your pregnancy I'd talk to your doctor about your concerns. They should be able to answer any questions. Hope you have a healthy pregnancy! i also had a miscarriage in the past at about 11 weeks.
