Q: Membrane sweep! Does it really work?!

Today was my due date but unfortunately baby boy is still MIA! :( Tomorrow I see my doctor and was thinking about getting a membrane sweep! Last Wednesday when I was checked I was 2cm dilated, 50% effaced and babys head was very low. I was wondering if any of you ladies had this done, and if so how many weeks were you? I heard it depends on how ready your cervix is and how far along you are so I'm hoping this works for me! Fingers crossed!!

Thanks ladies :) Hopefully my baby boy will be here soon! <3 xo

Kimburski: When I went to my appt I brought up getting my membranes stripped and my midwife pretty much looked at me like I was crazy and pretty much ignored it all together. I have no idea why and am mad now because I shouldve stayed on her more about it and got it done but I kinda just let it go. I brought it up to a couple other girls that work there and they thought i was crazy for wanting that done too just because they heard how painful it is but I could honestly care less how painful it is, that doesnt make me not want to get it done so I really dont know what all that was about.. But she said If the baby isnt here by my monday appt then well talk about me being induced. Ill be 41 weeks on Sunday so Im hoping he will come on his own by then but he deff seems a little too cozy in there and not wanting to come out lol. Good luck tomorrow by the way!!! xoxo

Hi FirsTimeMommy! I just had this done yesterday. I haven't felt any major changes so far, just the expected spotting and cramping. I was only dilated a cm so they weren't able to get at much of the sac. That is definitely a contributing factor. In any event, I think it's worth a shot. If you can try to go into labor naturally then why not try? My doctor also said that even if it doesn't start contractions it can help you to thin and dilate even more so even if you do end up getting induced you are a couple steps ahead of the game. It did hurt me pretty bad though but it's very quick. Do you know when/if they will induce you?

I had my membranes swept with my daughter at 39 weeks 2 days and the doctor said I would go into labor, if it worked, within 24 hours. That was Friday around 10 am. I went into labor Sunday about 2:30 am, about 2 hours after I lost my mucous plug. So it took a little bit longer, but seemed to work. Good luck!

It didn't work for me and I had it done about 5 times and was still overdue by 13 days. However, to be fair my midwife wasn't able to get much "stuff" to come off so maybe that was why. I hear it can work wonders for some so I say go for it! Good luck!!

with my last baby (#3) i was 2-3 cm & 75% effaced at 36+4 & had it done. my water broke at 37+5 with no contractions so i had to be induced. i am now 37 wks with #4 & thursday at 36+4 was 3cm & 75% effaced. my midwife said she did a slight sweep but not alot & i lost my mucus plug that evening & tonight have been having contractions coming about every 10 min. i'm still waiting on them to get closer to 5 mins before i get too excited & head to the hospital.
