We saw our twins at 5 weeks 3 days. I had never had an ultrasound before and even I could tell there were two distinct little circles (two yolk sacks) on the ultrasound.

Fraternal twins can be seen as early as 5 weeks. Identical is more difficult to diagnose, as they will most likely share a placenta.

Saw twins at 8 weeks. Although that was my first appointment and it was transvaginal.

They can see as soon as they can see one but if it's early it could be missed if it's not transvaginal. The abdominal ultrasound can't see everything that early as it's low in the pelvis and are just not as high of quality.

If they do a 6 week scan, they can usually see if there are multiple embryos. They can def see multiples at 8+ weeks. With my first pregnancy, they did a scan at 5 weeks 6 days. They did a second scan at 10 weeks to confirm that there wasn't one "hiding." I have a strong family history on the maternal side for fraternal twins so I have to be double checked since I am high risk for multiples.
